Lake Zurich is a large body of water located in southwestern Illinois, between the towns of Geneva and Mayfield. The name "Lake Zurich" was given to it by the United States government in 1818 as part of a land grant to the town of Geneva. The name is derived from German word Waal, meaning 'river'. The body of water covers an area of about 283 square miles (704 km2). It has a surface elevation range from 350 feet (111 m) at its lowest point to 4,179 feet (1,462 m) at its highest point. The largest island is Mesabi Hills, which reaches an elevation of 671 feet (200 m). Inland are several smaller lakes and ponds. The first European settlers in what is now Lake Zurich were French fur traders who arrived in 1785. They named the body of water after Jean-Baptiste de Lacrosse, Sieur de La Salle's lieutenant general on the Illinois side of the Great Lakes. Lacrosse had been sent with troops under General Peter Krieger to explore these new lands northwestward from Superior in present-day Wisconsin Territory when he discovered what he thought was a great natural harbor on the western end of Lake Michigan. Lacrosse developed his idea into a permanent settlement and built a fortification on mesa overlooking the lake. He named his post Gouverneur du lac des Illiniens ('Governor Of The Lake Of Chicago'). In 1809 Lacrosse sold his rights to this portage for $2 million ($40 million today). In 1837 Congress authorized building on what is now north shorelineof Lake Zurich by Supervisor James Hickey as part of efforts to provide navigable waterways for steamboats operating between Chicago and points east across Lake Michigan. Work began on this project during President Andrew Jackson's first term and ended six years later when navigation became possible only through channels created by locks and dams downstream from West Side Lock & Dam No. 2 near Geneva. This new route led downriver past present-day Mayfield before turning south alongpresent day I-90 until reaching downtown Chicago whereupon it turned northwest again before terminating at Wabash locks & Dam just beyond suburban Wheaton Heights. In spiteof being much farther upstream than any other major American city at that time, Chicago became an important commercial center due largely to its position as one mile wide open strait linking two branches ofthe Mississippi River through which goods could be shipped upriver or downriver without getting caught in shipping lanes off either coast; thus opening up opportunities for transportation not available earlier overland routes or only using river boats or sailing vessels encountering difficulty navigating rapids or strong tidal waves caused by Hurricane Sandy (& others such as Katrina) making travel inland difficult or impossible
