The name “Lake In The Hills” was given to this body of water by settlers who desired to name a location after a hill located in neighboring Decatur County. At first they named their new community “In The Hills” because they thought it would be easy for people to remember where they were situated. However, over time residents shortened the name to “Lake In The Hills” because it sounded more like an Americanized version of “Hillis Hall” in nearby Skokie, Illinois. Today, if you go out onto Big Little or Little White Lakes there will likely be someone fishing as well as boating and swimming available for those with some desire! Although not always crowded on busy days during summertime there can often be quite a few people on either lake when I went lately – perfect for taking a peaceful swim or just sunbathing on one! There are also several boat launch ramps accessible from both lakes making getting out onto them especially convenient for those looking to fish or just relax!

Lake In The Hills, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lake In The Hills was platted in 1853 by James A. Schofield and named for his friend and business associate Colonel Amos L. Lake. At first it consisted only of two lots on the north side of the then small stream that flowed through it – West Side Prairie (later known as Wellesley) and East Side Prairie (later known as White Sands). In 1864, three new Lots were platted: North Side Prairie (later known as Arlington Heights), South Side Prairie (later known as Tinley Park), and West Side Prairie (later known as River Forest). These Lots became incorporated into the Village of InThe Hills in 1872 when all except Arlington Heights were annexed to it. In 1888, a post office was established at InThe Hills with Elisha Ames serving as its firstpostmaster; this office closed in 1912 after Ames' death. In 1916, an electric streetlight system was installed in InThe Hills; this system continued until 1951 when a new gas-fired streetlight system replaced it. A store opened on Elm Street near Clark Avenue in 1922 which served the village until 1959 when the store moved to 95th Street and State Road 31st Avenue within InThe Hills village limits where it still operates today under the name "Hillside Mall". According to the 2000 census, there are 1,752 people living in or nearby Lake In The Hills Village Platting area making up just over 54% of its residents while 4% reside outside of village boundaries
