By 1800, there were more than 20 settlements around Lake In The Hills including Hinsdale (now part of Chicago), Lockport (now part of Erie), Batavia (now a suburb of Buffalo), Niles (now part of Streator), Dietzville (now a suburb of Springfield) and Grayslake (near Chicago). One major development that took place during the early 19th century on the west side of town was the construction of railroads which gave rise to new business opportunities for entrepreneurs such as John Pemberton who built one of North America's first cotton gin factories on State Street in 1834. This led to an increase in population on west Side streets which became known as "the street with no name."
