The community of Crystal City grew rapidly due to trade with abolitionist groups travelling through nearby Indiana and Illinois for goods needed for the anti-slavery movement. By 1847, over 50 homes had been erected and two stores were open when white mobs looted and burned several settlements including Crystal City on October 10th of that year as retribution for local support for slavery In 1851 white settlers formed a company to purchase 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of swampy ground east of Crystal City from James HWhite for $1,000 (). This area would eventually become known as "the Heights" or "Hills." The new community quickly developed due to its location near Indianola Creek and railroad tracks which made it an ideal place to raise crops and livestock while also providing easy access to markets throughout central Illinois

Lake In The Hills, Illinois is a community located in the county of DuPage, Illinois. It was founded in 1836 by General John H. Lawler and his wife, Sarah. The community first appeared on maps in 1837 as part of land that John H. Lawler had purchased from the Sauk Indians for $2 per acre. In 1871, Distinguished citizens James Mclntyre and Augustus Kelley donated matching funds to erect a Carnegie library within the limits of Lake In The Hills. This important structure served as both an educational center for students in the surrounding townships and also as a means for providing civic programs and social events to promote local charitable work among residents.By 1916, all but two buildings on Main Street had been erected; this grand setting was made possible by an additional donation from Mrs. Averell Harriman which funded construction of three more blocks between State Street and Michigan Avenue northward into Glen Ellyn
