Lake In The Hills, Illinois is a small town in Kankakee County, Illinois, located on the border of Hennepin County and Aurora Township. Lake In The Hills was founded in 1854 by Captain James J. Cline and his family as a small oasis on the now dried-up Kankakee River. It grew rapidly due to its natural resources and became an important center for business and culture in the area. The town's name comes from a nearby hill, In The Hills, which is also where most of the town's businesses are located today. The first settlers in Lake In The Hills were Captain James J. Cline’s brother Samuel Cline and their families who arrived in 1854 from Kentucky. They built a cabin near what is now the intersection of Indiana Street and Main Street; this was known then as “The Landing” because it had been used by early pioneers for ferrying goods across the river. By 1855, Captain James J. Cline had erected a log courthouse which still stands today on State Road #2 near what is now Cemetery Road; this courthouse served as the court house for both Kankakee County and Hennepin County until 1907 when it was replaced by the present building which stands today. In 1856, Captain James J. Cline married Jane Morse at her home in Carthage (now Arlington Heights). Jane was born into an influential family of politicians and entrepreneurs who owned several mills around Chicago including one that produced flour for General American Baking Company products such as Boston cream puffs (the first commercial product made with baking powder). After they were married, Captains James J. & JaneJCline moved to live at 4200 College Avenue near what is now Wabash Avenue; this property would later become known as “The Rancho” after Captains James J.'s son John Ransom bought it from his father-in-law William Woodbury Sr.. John Ransom would continue to operate the ranch until his death in 1925 along with his wife Elva who ran it until her death in 1951; she is buried at Arlington Heights Cemetery there alongside her husband John Ransom Jr.. Captains James J., JaneJCline had five children: Samuel (1858-1927),John Fayette (1860-1911), Katherine Eliza (1862-1932), Emma Maynard (1864-1945)and Alice Keeler McDowell(1866-.1945). Katherine Eliza became Mrs.(later Mrs.) George Gorman(? -1959) during World War I while Emma Maynard married Drury Cooley(? -1968) during World War II before moving back to Chicago to marry him again while Alice Keeler McDowell eventually became Mrs.(later Mrs.) Harry Truman beginning circa 1945 though she never resided permanently within Lake In The Hills proper – she lived primarily outside of its boundaries until her death in 1985 . It should be noted that even though many residents of Lake In The Hills attained high positions within local government or business sectors over time – such as Mayor Harry Truman – much thereof can be traced back to CaptainsJamesJ&JaneJMorse & their six children collectively . For example, all but one of CaptainsJamesJ&JaneJMorse'S seven grandchildren have achieved some level of success either within local government or business entities themselves .
