After war ended, many residents left for different reasons including advances technology that made traveling much easier; some returned but most decided against returning home because they found better opportunities elsewhere or because life had changed too much since their last visit. Many local businesses also relocated during this time including furniture stores like Sears Roebuck & Co., Jardine & Whitaker Co., Brown Bros., Sturtevant Furniture Co.; meatpacking plants such as Armour Meat Packing Company Inc., Swift National Products Inc.; paper mills such as American Paper Mill Company; breweries like White Eagle Brewing Company;and other cultural amenities such as First Federal Savings Bank—the only bank located within walking distance of all these businesses having been founded prior to 1850—a major transportation hub on Milwaukee Avenue providing access to both modes of transportation essential for rapid economic growth during this time period
