Lake In The Hills, Illinois is a small town in western Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located about 17 miles (27 km) east of Chicago and 15 miles (24 km) west of the city's limits. Lake In The Hills was platted as a township in 1847 by Stephen A. Douglas and James K. Polk. On July 14, 1911, it was merged into the City of Chicago. Lake In The Hills is known for its dramatic hillside scenery, which can be seen from most parts of the town including the downtown area and several neighborhoods such as North Shore Drive and Old Town Road. The town also has a number of parks which offer views of the surrounding countryside or lakeshore. The town was founded on an artificial lake that was created by draining part of an open meadow near present-day Waukegan, Illinois. At first there were only a few hundred people living around the lake; but as development went on and more people moved to nearby towns and cities, so too did demand for land around the artificial waterbody that became known as "Lake In The Hills." Today, Lake In The Hills ranks fourth among Cook County's municipalities in population size with over 915 residents aged 5 years or older (2015).
