Lake Forest, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Formerly a farming village situated on the western edge of Lake Forest, it became an industrial center after World War II and now features several thousand high-end homes and businesses. The village had its start as a Methodist congregation on the banks of the Fox River in what is now Highland Park. In 1836, James Haughton donated land to build a school and farm there; it opened in 1838. By 1860, however, only one house remained in the village – that of Reverend John Wetherspoon – and by 1870 all but two houses were gone. In 1881–82, Samuel Proctor organized construction of what would become Proctor & Gamble's first factory here; it began operations in October 1886 and employed 400 people total over its 15 years (it closed in 1945). Over time other companies followed: Alcoa (1910), Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Company (1915), IBM (1944). The post-war boom brought new life to the town: by 1960 there were more than 1,000 businesses employing over 10,000 workers. However growth stopped abruptly around 1970 when production lines shut down at Alcoa's plant north of town due to fuel price hikes. After much effort by residents and business owners alike – including creating a park called "Lake Forest Village" – progress resumed during the 1990s as various industries returned with investment such as Hitachi Ltd.'s new power plant which started production in 1996; also achieved significant revivals for retail development with Sears Holdings knock-off store openings starting up throughout downtown Lake Forest during this time period among other successes like reopening State Street Bridge just east of town following heavy reconstruction following severe flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina five years later

Lake Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,500 at the 2000 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest in Chicago metropolitan area. Lake Forest was founded by settlers from New England in 1836 as a small town on the shores of the now-extinct Calumet River. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location on navigable waterways and its close proximity to Chicago. In 1852, Lake Forest became a municipality and began exercises of charter rights with other municipalities within Cook County. The first mayor of Lake Forest was J. H. Goodrich Sr.. In 1865, lake forest annexed part of neighboring unincorporated territory which included present day Winnetka Heights and Roscoe Park. In 1870, President Ulysses S Grant dedicated an overlook known as Grant Park in honor of his predecessor James Kappanvelt Grant who had served as Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of War during his term as president from 1869-1877 inclusive (the exact date cannot be determined). The park includes a replica of Kappanvelt’s original home which also served as office headquarters for many years until it burned down in 1902. In 1878, Lake Forest became one of five cities within Chicago under Mayor John D’Arcy Quinn after he was elected City Councilman from Logan Square District 2 following the death of Daniel Burnham who had been Mayor since 1893. After leaving office in 1911 due to health reasons, Quinn was succeeded by Harold Washington who reigned until his death two years later at age 74 in December 1913 while still serving as mayoralty candidate for Chicago’s 24th Ward seat which he won over incumbent Richard M “Dick”stein by less than 1 percentage point when all ballots were counted including provisional votes cast not yet counted because they were processed immediately following election night). Upon Washington’s death at age 76 without having completed his full term that would have ended on January 3rd 1916 (he would have been 78 years old), James Rolph took over as Mayor and continued serving until his resignation effective March 16th 1917 (one day before World War I started). From 1919 through 1933 Rolph served concurrently as acting Mayor; he then retired from public service effective April 15th 1933 citing health problems caused by arthritis contracted during his long career including four terms being impeached by the House Un-American Activities Committee during which time he never uttered any negative words about America or its citizens despite that fact some members may have provided Material Support to Nazi Germany During this time period). A new building designated “Rolph Building – City Hall” replaced what had been originally built next door on State Street between First National Bank & Racine Avenue where City Manager Harry Wohlstadt held office from 1909 until 1933 when he assumed responsibility for Public Works & Housing Department - now known as Department Of Planning & Development When Dickstein vacated this seat upon becoming UAW Local President Emeritus Willie Brown announced plans to run for Mayor against Brown instead Sam Hoyt announced plans to run against Hoyt but Hoyt resigned prior to filing paperwork only days before Election Day Brown narrowly defeated Hoyt 54%-46%
