Lake Forest is a city located in the northern Illinois town of Park Ridge, near Chicago. The population was 452 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 as a small community on the shores of Lake Forest Lake. The name "Lake Forest" comes from proprietor John Smeaton's purchase of an east-west road right through his property and connecting it to downtown Chicago. The first post office opened in 1893, and the first store was operated by Dora Ledyard. In 1902, the village became incorporated and began to develop its own schools, fire department, library, stores and other services. By 1910, there were over 100 residents. That year also saw construction of what is now known as John Smeaton Plaza Downtown which seated 1,500 people during its opening day. The parkland now occupied by the plaza served as a common ground for all residents until 1955 when it was annexed by Park Ridge Township and became part of that township's central business district (CBD). Today, Lake Forest remains one of Chicagoland's most vibrant communities with restaurants, shopping malls and parks dotting its landscape. Lake Forest, Illinois was first settled by the Peoria and Pekin tribes in 1812. The town was originally named for José de la Cruz, who donated land to the government for a school. The town was incorporated in 1847. In 1865, the village of Lake Forest was created from portions of the town. The village had a post office and two stores until it merged with thetown in 1921. The population of Lake Forest peaked at 10,500 in 1940, but declined to 7,500 by 1970.
