Lake Forest, Illinois is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the north side of Chicago. The population was 59,813 at the 2010 census. It lies within the Lake Forest–Elmhurst School District. The name "Lake Forest" likely originated from two properties which were both donated to the town by local farmers in 1872: one called "Lake forest", and another which became known as "The Farms". In 1920, when it was annexed into the municipality of Elmhurst, "Lake Forest" remained its legal name until 1959. In 1872, a group of pioneers who had fled Iowa for Illinois decided to settle in what would become Lake Forest. They named their new town after themselves – DonaldsonForest – in honor of their leader, John Donaldson (1821-1889). Mr.Donaldson originally owned 640 acres (258 hectares). By 1870, much of what would later be considered Elmhurst had been developed as a string of villages around a small reservoir called Little Rock Creek. When Elkhart Township was established in 1865, part of it included what are now Elmhurst and North Park areas east of State Street. Because this part of Elkhart Township lay within Cook County (then Racine County), no village ever grew up there; it only came under township control after Lake Forest incorporation on October 1, 1871 (). It wasn't until 1886 that ELKHART TOWNSHIP - comprising all but one acre (0.4 hectare) lying east of present-day State Street - voted to establish its own school board with seven members instead of four provided by township trustees.. This change not only relieved ELKHART TOWNSHIP from taxation by Cook County but also gave rise to rumors that Elmhurst's heavy school taxes were responsible for neighboring communities' reluctance to annex into ELKHART TOWNSHIP... By 1900 however all vestiges of resistance to annexation had faded and most residents seemed contented to remain within their own homes jurisdictions.. On February 14th 1907 “ deviations” occurred at an election meeting held in behalf OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF LAKFORD FALLS - including allegations that some trustees receivedimproperly cashed contributions... A petition signed by over 100 electors seeking recall against five incumbents failed to gain enough signatures required for recall petitions... Subsequent elections on May 15th 1907 resulted in two new trustees being elected without recall ballots… On November 6th 1907 voters approved a referendum proposing annexation into COOK COUNTY - now represented by unincorporated parts eastof State Street’s boundaries.. upon ratification all land west thereof became part Of LAKFORD FALLS This action solidified ELKHARD TOWNSHIPS connections with lake forest while creating an enclave surrounded by county lines bristling with schools and businesses
