Lake Forest is a small, but growing city in the northwestern corner of Illinois. It is home to approximately 20,000 people and has been increasing in population since the early 1990s. The city's economy is based on its location and businesses in the downtown area. Lake Forest also enjoys a strong reputation for its parks and open spaces. The history of Lake Forest goes back more than 100 years. The area that now makes up Lake Forest was first settled by American Indians in the mid-19th century. In 1871, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a line from Chicago to Rockford, Illinois, through what is now Lake Forest. This new town quickly became known as "the City of Oaks." By 1912, however, it had shrunk to just 1,500 residents when the railroad closed down. It wasn't until 1944 that Lake Forest truly began to grow as a community. That year, local officials authorized the construction of a dam across the Fox River at central Parkfield. This project would create what would become one of America's largest park systems – over 43 square miles (107 km2). Today, central Parkfield remains one of lake forest's most popular areas with plenty of activities available for visitors including hunting, fishing and hiking/biking trails. In addition to its large park system,Lakeforest also enjoyed success in other aspects of its economy during the 1940s and 1950s; both periods were marked by an increase in manufacturing jobs within town limits due to World War II shortages of labor elsewhere in Illinois (see: "Economic Development" below). During this time period too there was significant growth within retail sectors such as grocery stores and department stores as well as professional services such as law firms and accounting firms (see: "Businesses" below). During much of this time period there were two mainstay political parties; both represented Democratic strongholds within town limits at that time (although Republicans did exist by then). One key factor behind these trends was undoubtedly Father Coughlin's influential support fromwithintownlimitsforhis newlyformed Republican Party after leaving his old party affiliation several years earlier (see: "Republicanism" below). As seen throughout much rural America during this era Father Coughlin assumed an outsized role within many small towns thanks largely to his charisma alone- something he continued to do into recent decades despite increasingly stricter campaign finance laws which have damaged his influence overall*(see: Political Parties sidebar later on)).

In 1888, another pioneer settler named Alfred Pritzker moved into town and started a grocery store and bowling alley called Pritzker's Alley; it remains open today as one of downtown Lake Forest's most popular attractions. In 1954, when Illinois became an all-white state under newly implemented race protection laws known as "The Fair Housing Act", Lake Forest saw its first African American resident: Roy Robinson who worked at Jaffrey Paper Merchants until 1957 before moving to Chicago to found his own paper business there

Lake Forest, Illinois is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee metropolitan area. Lake Forest was first settled in 1847 by English settlers looking for land to farm after they were forced out of their native England by the Napoleonic Wars. The name "Lake Forest" comes from an early pioneer settler's plan to build a dam on the Kimball River and make a lake there.
In 1872, two years after General David Dixon's invasion of Illinois and his victory over Native Americans at Sault Ste Marie, General Oliver Otis Howard arrived in the Chicago area with troops and began construction of what would become Soldier Field on North Side Street in downtown Chicago. After Howard's death in 1876, local businessman John Daley took control of the project and finished it within three years for $ 35 million dollars. Daley named it Leland Park after his father-in-law Leland Stanford Jr., one of America's richest men.
Dixon Boulevard runs through the heart of town while Clark Avenue runs east-west across it separating Downtown from West Townships which are residential neighborhoods adjacent to Lake Forest University (LFU) campus located on NW Second Street between Wacker Drive and Halsted Road.
As suburban development increased around downtown Chicago during the late 20th century and into the 21st century, much of what once constituted Lake Forest have been absorbed into neighboring municipalities such as Evanston (north), Rosemont (south), Wheaton (east), Oak Lawn ( west), Schaumburg (southwest) or Tinley Park (northwest). However, portions of Douglas Park still remain annexed to Lake Forest as well as parts of Northwest Side that are currently considered part of Oak Lawn Township although they have always been considered part of Lake Forest since its founding until annexation by Northwestern Illinois University Campus District #1 in 1984.
