In 1848, when the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built its line through town, it reached Huron Street and thus renamed it North Avenue after Huron Lake - which would be its permanent name until given back to lakefront property east of I-94 in 1976) The following year saw yet another designation change when part of what is now Downtown Chicago opened up and became known as South SideChicago - including much of what are now North SideLake Forest neighborhoods such as Maywood (to the south) and Lawrence Park (to the north). Lake Forest was founded in 1837 by George and Martha Quincy. The name is derived from the grove of trees that once abounded in the area. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and other crops. In 1845, the town was incorporated and began to grow rapidly as a result of its location on a major transportation artery. By 1870, Lake Forest had become an established village with a population of over 1,000 people. During World War II, Lake Forest played an important role in the production of munitions and other war-related items. After the war, growth slowed but nonetheless it remains one of Illinois' fastest-growing municipalities. In recent years, lake forest has seen significant redevelopment along its central business district which has led to new jobs and businesses opening up in the neighborhood.
