The first Europeans to encounter what would become Lake Forest were French traders sailing upriver from Chicagoland in 1641/2 when they noted "a great lake lying between these woods" They named their new discovery Notre Dame de Lorette after Mary Queen OF Ireland's cathedral at Dublin which they had seen while travelling downriver some days earlier according to Jean Baptiste La Salle's journal entry dated September 25th 1642 / 3rd week following his landing at Joliette Mississippi River junction After finding no useful resources here they abandoned their exploration but returned downstream some time later under Louisiana governor Robert De la Salle who name honorized them for their discovery along with Nicolas Richelieu further upstream at Prairie du Chien where he found salt water springs - still called those springs today due to their proximity only about 15 miles from where Laclede Point now stands Today more than 350 years later those springs are again being explored by people because there are new discoveries just off shore! John Richardson began farming land northward from his original home-site on what would eventually become what was to be known as Lakeshore Drive-on what would soon be known as Richardsonsville Road-in 1847 when he bought 10 acres north of present day Richardsonsville Road He also set up shop making him oneofthe first farmers in town By 1861 year snd his farmstead had increased to 100 acres What we now know as Richardsonsville Road extended northwest from then southwesterly limit then turned southeast parallel with present day Ives Avenue until it crossed present day State Street just east ot Richtersdale Rd thence continuing easterly along Richtersdale Rd until it reached its current northerly limit near Tilden Ave This initial stretch extending northerly 1/4 mile becameState StreetandEasterLYouthanearly roadwidethis spot today
