The name "Lake Forest" originated from a location on the east side of town near present-day Northwestern University, which was named for Captain John Fitch and his family who had moved there in 1837. In 1868, Jameson & Company constructed one of the first steamboats on Lake Michigan and transported passengers and goods between Chicago and Evanston. The company's founder, Jameson himself, also owned land around today's downtown core that became home to many of Lake Forest's earliest businesses. In 1892, local residents purchased 1 million acres (500 km²) of agricultural land adjoining Cook County to create what would become known as "The Farm", which still supports a large percentage of its current population (72%). After years of negotiation and discussion with neighboring municipalities – some only aware of rumors about plans for development – it finally came into being on October 15th, 1923 when City Council passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by Lake Forest from Des Plaines Township; this was just two months after township trustees voted not to annex their own village due to concerns about traffic congestion caused by anticipated growth in neighboring communities. Since incorporation as a city in 1974, Lake Forest has made significant progress both economically and culturally: Comprehensive planning efforts have resulted in some Ofis Stations being built within city limits; new cultural institutions such as the Art Institute have been created or expanded; while more than $100 million has been invested into infrastructure projects over the last 20 years alone (including projects such as street resurfacing and lighting), much remains undone despite Mayor Robert Moneys urging for economic redevelopment throughout his tenure.

On October 25th, 1800, Bloomington Township changed its name to "Lake Forest" after George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon had been sold to James Kapp and his brothers for $1 million. In 1837 John and Mary Ann Weems founded what would become known as Lake Forest after purchasing land from Anthony Wayne near where they lived on Chicago's north side. On July 16th, 1861 Lake Forest voted to secede from Cook County because they felt their taxes were too high. The decision not only saved the town but also set off a series of riots which lasted for several days throughout Illinois. The first post office opened at Lake Forest on November 8th1861 (the first post office established within Cook County) The first telephone service arrived in 1948 from Chicago suppliers Bell Telephone Company . By 1951 there were over 55 businesses located at 3rd Street & Old Glendon Road In 1958 the City annexed parts of Elmhurst Village that adjoined City Limits

Growth slowed during World War II as many manufacturers moved their operations out of town or closed their doors altogether; however, today some local businesses continue to thrive thanks to strong support from government agencies and private investors.
