Lake Forest, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 43,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. Lake Forest is home to many University of Illinois and Northwestern colleges and universities as well as a large number of businesses and industry. The city was founded by George Washington Carver in 1881 as a small farming village on the north bank of the Fox River. Carver's factory became one of the largest in America and he remains an important figure in Lake Forest's history. The first residents of what would become Lake Forest were farmers who grew corn, wheat, soybeans, rice and other crops on their land between 1881 and 1887. In 1908, when Alderman John Fenton purchased 920 acres (3 km²) of land east of town from his brother-in-law Abraham Lincoln Sellon for $5 per acre ($140 total), he began to develop it into what would become known as "the most beautiful place on earth". He named it "Lake Forest", inspired by a grove of trees located near his home in Baltimore Township (now Hazel Crest). At that time there were only 12 houses in town – all built before 1923 – but over time more houses were added along with two hospitals (Lincoln Hospital & Rush University Medical Center) and various other businesses which dot the today's skyline. In 1924–1925 Alderman Bob Doherty developed a plan to create an enlarged downtown area around lighted stages at the then current lakefront site where the Fox River met State Street. This project led to Doherty becoming one of Lake Forest’s earliest mayors and helped make him one its most successful leaders during its early years."
Lake Forest was first settled by the Potawatomi in the 18th century. The area was surveyed and taxed by the Illinois General Assembly in 1792. The town of Lake Forest originated from the merger of several small villages, including Oak Grove, North Chicago, Deer Park and Streamwood. On November 7, 1837, a charter was granted to what is now known as Lake Forest College. In 1861, Cook County was organized and Lake Forest became one of its five counties. The county seat changed from North Chicago to Lake Forest in 1872. In 1926, the city of South Elgin was founded near present-day Loop Road and State Street in central Lake forest.
