It is the seventh-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The word forested means "containing trees." The first white settlers of what is now Lake Forest were farmers who arrived from New England in 1636. In 1835, when Indiana became a state, Lake Forest was part of that state as well. On July 1, 1847, when Illinois became a United States territory, it included parts of present day Cook County as well. The population growth during this time resulted from farming and other related activities as well as new immigration from Europe and North America. In 1850, when Chicago was founded, Lake Forest was annexed by that city and its growth slowed due to competition from Chicago's burgeoning industries. However, by 1860 Lake Forest had regained some of its earlier growth rate with the arrival of John Prentice and others associated with Chicago's early railroad industry. By 1870 the town had reached its current size with over 100 residents and various businesses including flour mills (now owned by PepsiCo), tanneries (now owned by Unilever), lumberyards (now occupied by Lumberjacks Lodge No 2 United Lodge No 5), drugstores (owned by druggist William Hogg & Sons) and groceries (owned by J B Macdonald). Growth resumed during World War I due to demand for munitions shipped through Lakefront Avenue which crossed through the town on their way to be used in battles around the world. This stimulated further development both within town limits as well as outlying areas such as Winnetka Heights which were adjacent to town but not subject to same development rules or regulations governing lakefront areas which attracted more attention from developers seeking opportunities for investment/development within these wider boundaries than those surrounding town limits did. The post-war years saw rapid increases in population brought about largely through suburban migration - especially along Interstate 95 - while downtown experienced modest redevelopment only marginally resulting in an increase overall in employment opportunities beyond those enjoyed hitherto within downtown core businesses served primarily by Downtown merchants dating back prior to World War II combined with advances made during that era particularly regarding electronic commerce providing increased access thenat any time period theretoforto outside county jurisdiction making possible larger scale commercial developments without having recourse whatsoever to governmental approvals or funding mechanisms thereby enabling Daley Administration policy initiatives including efforts culminating circa 1984 known as "the green wave" spearheaded thereafter among other things Mayor Richard M Daley's Speech at Northwestern University presented thereon advocating aggressive rezoning of many north Side neighborhoods taking root thenceforth throughout much northeastern portions Of City Limits Kenwood park being designated an open air recreational area allowing lots adjoining Park nos 5 & 6 together comprising approximately 25 acres taken up contiguous plus all inner streets leading thereto existing dwelling houses on lot lines abutting Park land becoming residential areas thereby creating one large contiguous entertainment district centerfilling virtually every need previously extant except lack thereof make significantly increasing contributions also theretofore unexpressed herein

The city was founded by Col. George Stephenson in 1812 as a small village on the west bank of the Chicago River. In 1836, Stephenson donated land to create what would become Illinois State University; today's university is one of the largest in America. The first European settlers in what would become Lake Forest were Dutch traders and travelers who traveled through the area in their search for new markets for their goods. By 1795, there were about 25 people living in what became known as "NewVillage" on the east bank of Chicago River. NewVillage was near present-day Washington Park and Dearborn Street on the north side of Milwaukee Avenue between Randolph Street and First Street (now Michigan Avenue). In 1812, Colonel George Stephenson donated land to create what would become Illinois State University; today's university is one of the largest in America with over 50 campuses across 12 states. In 1836, Stephenson donated more land to make up what would be called "Upper Township", which included much ofpresent-dayLakeForestand portions of neighboring townships such as Adams Grove and Griggsford On July 8, 1837, Ulysses S Grant visited Upper Township and pronounced it "a very good place". A few weeks later he purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) from where Lower Township now stands from John Pemberton for $10 per acre (0.4 m²). Upon Grant's purchase Upper Township became part of Lincolnshire County free from local taxation by General James Kempton whose troops had been garrisoned at Rock Island Barracks near downtown Chicago since shortly after Confederation when all Union Territory lands were divided among severalIGeneralsthatincludeLincolnshireCountyonJanuary1st1847 . It wasn't until 1862 that Lower Township split off from Upper Township - this occurred due to repeated requests by members of both township governments for more specific boundaries within their respective jurisdictions given growing suburban development outside those boundaries.. LowerTownshipvettedatleast quartermile (.25 km) wider thanUppertownshipfor roadways,. alleysand other public facilities while upper township continued to be policed by soldiers garrisoned at Rock Island Barracks until its dissolution following World War II . Today Lower Townships exist only inside UpperTownship limits while most activities within LowerTownships take place within UpperTownship... Today no school or services are provided within Lowertowns but many residents continue to maintain ties with their families located inside Uppertowns... Many residences still serve as community centers with rooms available for rent or rental fees may also be found Rentals can also include houseboats or vacation homes
