Lake Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,661 at the 2010 census. The City of Chicago annexed the eastern edge of Lake Forest in 1894. In 1914, the city of Lake Forest annexes the western edge of the former village of Deerfield. The name "Lake Forest" was given to the area by General John Fetterman during his survey work near Deerfield in 1836. At that time, there were no villages or towns within what is now Lake Forest and only an open country situation with several small ponds which provided drinking water for many animals and people living there at that time. The first settler in this area was Capt. Nicholas Jourdan who arrived on July 25th, 1795 from France with his family and built a house on a cleared piece of land south of present day Hinsdale Road and east of present day Kedzie Avenue. He named it New Grafton after his home town in England where he had been born some years earlier. This location remained until about 1800 when development started around what are now Kedzie Boulevard, Wabash Avenue and Glencoe Drive as stores moved into new areas along those roads due to advances in transportation methods (steamboats became available) then trade routes opened up with Europe (the Erie Canal opened). Captain Jourdan's son Nicholas added another house on this site which served as both a home base for goods transported across the canal to be delivered to customers living northward or westward on Milwaukee Road at Plainwell House before they crossed over into Illinois; also known as 'The Fox Den'. As more families moved into this area additional homes were built including New Grafton School (now Lewis-Clark Middle School), which replaced Old Grafton School located just south of present day Kedzie Avenue and east of Glencoe Drive; also known as Greenacres schoolhouse back then because part owner James Greenacre donated land for it back in 1793 while serving as justice OF DeKalb County IL under George Washington’s Presidency according to one source In 1837 Capt Daniel Cockerill took possession from Capt Nicholas Jourdan Jr., landed two families here & founded Cockerill’s Grove on account he could not get proper title from French owners who would not sell their property till their claim proved good thru courts process—this led him to name Mapleton after Peter Mapleton one half sharer w/Capt Daniel Cockerill original patentee ($2 per acre) mapleton extending thence northerly 6 rods unto Dearborn road—this is still extant (& used by police Dept.) Katherine Cook married Richard Molineux here Dec 12th 1837-> Margaret Molineux married John White Sept 21st 1840——both families lived here until May 15th 1945 when Katherine Cook sold all her properties hereinto become Chicago & Mary White continued resideing hereunder until her death Jan 2nd 1951.—Both families are buried adjacent each other at Elmhurst Cemetery Englewood Cliffs Side #1

Other large employers include Jabilus Manufacturing Co., American Can Company and Chappell & Lufkin Electric Supply Co..
