La Grange is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. La Grange is located on the border of LaGrange Township and Will County. It is northeast of Chicago. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Grange were French traders and missionaries in the 17th century. The first permanent settler in what would become La Grange was John Sibley who arrived in 1831. By 1835, there were about 20 people living here. A post office called "Sibley" was established here in 1836; it continued to be used until 1888. In 1847, land purchases made by General William Henry Harrison led to the creation of LaGrange Township from part of Will County. In 1860, the township had a population of 1,024 people and it annexed portions of Addison and Morton townships (now known as Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights). In 1870, when railroad construction began through Cook County, much interest developed in buying land for railroads near LaGrange because stations would be built there and goods could be transported northward quickly. In order to avoid competition from other companies building tracks nearby (and also because la granges residents objected to being listed on maps as belonging to some other municipality), Congress passed an act creating la granges village as a separate incorporated village with its own rights and powers regarding property ownership and development within its boundaries- this act became effective on April 12, 1870 (). On October 15th 1890 Samuel Morse inaugurated his new telegraph line between Chicago area and Lowell Maury which passing through la granges village gave residents their first real sense of communication with each other outside their homes since before Eli Whitney invented photography back east! Of course everything changed after that fateful day when Central Pacific Railroad came through town bringing economic turmoil that rocked la granges for years! After years of industry dying out due mostly to lack of access or investment by newcomers(read: investors)the village slowly started recovering but hasnt really seen any major growth since then...until recently...lol
