La Grange, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Joshua Grange and his wife Rebecca. LaGrange is a small town located in southern Cook County, Illinois. The population of LaGrange was 1,811 as of the 2010 census. LaGrange is included in the Chicago metropolitan area. Joshua Grange came from a farm family that operated near Waukesha, Wisconsin. In 1824, Joshua's father married Sarah Allgood and they moved to what is now LaGrange. Joshua and his brothers also became farmers. AfterJoshua's father died in 1829, Joshua graciously offered to take on the farming responsibilities for all of his siblings if they would move to LaGrane with him and start a new life there. The brothers lived there for twenty years until their death in 1854. In 1847, Joshua Grange married Rebecca Laughlin and began farming at White Marsh Plantation east of Waukesha Lake on the banks of the Fox River which he named after himself and his first wife's parents (Laughlin). At this time White Marsh Plantation consisted of about forty acres along the north bank of the Fox River opposite present day downtown LaGrangue (the present day site of Granges' childhood home). The early days were difficult for both husband and wife since their large acreage required many hands to work it properly; however, through hard work together they built up one of northern Illinois' largest farms by 1850-51 when they had ten acres under cultivation averaging six bushels per acre or more than any other farm within fifty miles thereof! They continued to grow crops into the late 1800’s when railroads arrived in northwestern Illinois & brought with them extensive markets for agricultural goods which led to greater profits for them both….. eventually becoming so prosperous that they erected several grandiose residences within their own boundaries….. including an octagon shaped brick mansion still standing today at 9th & Washington Streets….built between 1860-1862 during an era when such architecture was very fashionable! From here on out their lives were dedicated solely to agriculture…….. until their death only two years later!!!!!
