The community was founded by Adolph Ziegler in 1871 as a small farming village on the edge of what is now Cicero Township. La Grange is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. La Grange is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the south side of the Maumee River and about 25 miles west of Chicago. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now LaGrange were French fur traders from Quebec in 1765. In 1801 LaGrange became a charter township in Kane County, Illinois. The town was platted by John Stephenson in 1825 and named for General Andrew Jackson's sister-in-law Mary Granger Blounts Green (1764-1837). La Grange had a post office from December 26, 1827 until it closed on October 30, 1865 due to lack of demand for mail service. In 1854 LaGrange became one of thirteen townships into which Kane County was divided under the new state government following the American Civil War. On January 1, 1865, La Granger surrendered to Union forces at Fort Dearborn near present day Chicago while still inside Illinois territory; this event marks the end of much conflict between Union and Confederate forces during that time period within Kane County as well as across much of Northwestern Illinois. Following World War II, La Grange experienced rapid growth as farms were developed along with various businesses such as an insurance company and shoe factory established there in the early 1950s followed by other industrial development over ensuing years such as heavy manufacturing around Interstate 90/Upper State Road 447 which bisected downtown LaGranges borders starting in 1984 when that section was built east–west through much rural farmland adjacent to what is now Brushy Bottom Regional Park located just north of I-90 exit 217) later becoming an anchor business district with high concentration of retail stores along main arterial streets including I-90/Upper State Road 447) also experiencing growth rates outpacing those seen in surrounding cities throughout all phases but most recently experiencing significant gentrification through increased housing prices although some older homes remain available for sale or rent
