The town of La Grange, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John Quintero and his wife Maria. The Quinteros were the first American settlers in what is now La Grange Township. La Grange became a village in 1881, and then a city in 1893. It was declared a state capital in 1907. LaGrange is located in DuPage County and has a population of over 90,000. The history of La Grange begins with John Quintero who came to America from Spain in 1795. He farmed on the land that now includes parts of present-day LaGrange Township and built the first cabin there. In 1847, he married Maria, daughter of José de la Garza y Ponce de León, one of the leading Spanish landowners in Northwest Illinois at the time. The couple started building their home on North Main Street near where it still stands today – just off State Road 58 – about two years after arriving here. John Quintero was an early settler who helped create what is now LaGrange Township from land that he owned back home on the Iberian Peninsula. He brought with him some 8000 dunums (about 168 acres) to start this new township, which later grew into what is nowLaGrange City Limits suburbs including Schaumburg Village, Glen Ellyn Park Districts II and III ( bounded by Interstate 55 to the north; Ford Road/Highway 10 to the east; Kedzie Avenue/State Route 12 south), Morton Grove Community District I ( bounded by Ford Road/Highway 10 to the north; Grand Trunk Railroad tracks curving east-northeast through Morton Grove), Arlington Heights Community District II ( bounded by Niles Avenue/ Roosevelt Boulevard to the north; Roosevelt Avenue eastward meetGrand Trunk Railroad tracks just south of Arlington Heights), Streator Heights Community District III ( bounded by Elmhurst Drive/Streavery Boulevard eastward meetNiles Avenue/Roosevelt Boulevard westward), Chicago Park District IV (Ford Road southeast corner). In 1893, when Chicago annexed much of Northwestern Illinois as part of its new territory under federal jurisdiction, La Grane became part of Chicago Municipal Authority No. 1 under Mayor Emanuel Jaffe’s administration as well as taking part in other municipal services such as trash collection and paving streets for automobiles within city limits only along with other wards throughout Cook County until 1933 when all municipalities were reorganized into Cook County government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program known as “Community Policing” which continued until 1965 when all municipalities were again reorganized into individual jurisdictions governed by elected officials headed respectively by mayors & councilors having responsibility for public health care services & street cleaning while also carrying out general planning directives set forth By The Chicago Planner Commission according To Which All Towns And Villages Were To Be Consolidated Into One City On A Grid System With Streets Named After Chief Executive Officers Of Each Ward
