In La Grange, Illinois, there have been handguns in the town for over 100 years. The first handgun to be legal in La Grange was a shotgun in 1868. In 1903, the first rifle to be legally possessed in La Grange was a Winchester rifle. The town's first gun store opened on Commercial Street in 1907 and continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1951. The most famous gun store of all time was the Krieger Gun Store which operated from 1927-1951. The store was home to many notable firearms dealers including Adolph A. Krieger Sr., who is considered the father of modern American ammunition manufacturing and also founded Fidelity Ammunition Company which became one of the largest ammunition manufacturers in the world. La Grange has also had a significant role in firearm regulation with several local ordinances regulating handgun ownership and possession being passed throughout the 1920s and 1930s. One such ordinance which survived into the present day is Section 12-1-2 of the township code which bans any person under 21 years old from owning or possessing a handgun without having prior written consent from an adult parent or guardian.

They raised four children: John Atherton II (b. 1837), Lillie Bessie (b. 1840), Samuel Hargrave (b. 1843), and Addison Flagler (b. 1850). In 1861 La Grange was annexed by Chicago; within two years it had outgrown its original village form and became one of Chicago's most rapidly growing neighborhoods thanks to its ample water supply, easy access to jobsites near Lake Michigan, good schools, and low crime rates until Prohibition destroyed many of these opportunities during the 1920s due to efforts by organized crime organizations interested in controlling alcohol sales throughout America's largest city
