In 1892, La Grange Park replaced Mount Prospect as home to America's first golf course and became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cook County. La Grange Park, Illinois is a small town located in LaGrange Township, Kane County, Illinois. The population was 3,522 at the 2000 census. LaGrange Park is one of the oldest villages in Kane County and was founded on May 1, 1837 by Captain Simon LaGrange and his wife Lucy. It was named for General Lafayette who had been wounded at Battle of Valmy in 1794. The first settlers to arrive in LaGrange Park were George and Martha Stephenson from Danville, Kentucky. They built a cabin on the east side of the park in 1838. The Stephenson Cabin still stands today and is a museum open to the public. In 1840 James Herron established a sawmill on Maple Street in La Grange Park which continued to produce lumber until it closed in 1966. In 1847 John Fentress opened a gristmill on Cherry Road near present day Kilbourne Avenue. This mill continued to operate until it closed in 1951. In 1850 Isaac Sibley erected an agricultural store and blacksmith shop at what is now corner of Main Street and Elmira Road. This store continues to be operated as an antique mall today called Sibley's Prairie Emporium.. In 1861 Lieutnant Colonel Samuel Haines donated land west of present day Kilbourne Avenue for the construction of a military academy which would eventually become Butler University.. A new school building was added to the northeast corner of this property between Main and Elmira Roads in 1870-71 when appropriations were made by Congress for that purpose.. In 1884 Congressman John J.-Doyle proposed that La Grane Park be renamed after him but no action was taken.. In 1907 Mrs Sarah Ewing donated land across from her childhood home (later known as Eastman House) for use as a public school system picnic ground which remains open to this day as Eastman School Field House Suite 4011-4013 . On November 6th 1907 “a beautiful” tree (now destroyed) grew up on this parcel north of where Eastman School now stands – becoming known locally as “The Girthner Tree” –replacing an old apple orchard which had been dedicated by Mrs Ewing many years earlier! A plaque commemorating this event can still be seen near current site off Elmira Drive NW . On October 15th 1909 railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt donated $10,000 towards erection of structures/grounds for baseball diamond/parking lot within village limits adjoining private lots already owned by individuals within village boundaries - these donations ultimately resulted in construction of Kimball Playfield & Baseball Ground adjacent to current Administration Building & North End Hallhouse follwing purchase by Village Board & Village Manager with funds raised thru special levy authorized under thencurrent Constitutionality Laws governing such matters .. After serving as Head groundskeeper (& later Director) during period 1959-1966 (when Village Manager also served concurrently as Trustee), Mr Irv Weisman became Parks Superintendent effective January 1st 1967 - following establishment Of Parks Department By ordinance #267 dated December 5th 1967 ..
