La Grange Park is a census-designated place located in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. La Grange Park is one of the oldest communities in Sangamon County and was established on November 10, 1839 by John Cramer and his family. The community grew rapidly due to its location near the new Sangamon River and its connection to the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1852, La Grange Park became a town when it annexed the neighboring village of Delhi. By 1860, La Grange Park had over 2,000 residents and boasted a school and church built by local merchants as well as several businesses such as Jardine's department store and Wessels Brewery. By 1870, LaGrange Park had an agricultural society that raised hay for local farmers while also importing grains from abroad. The post office opened in 1876 and soon became known as "the most important center for business in Sangamon County." In 1896, LaGrange Parks west side was destroyed by a fire that burned for days across much of central Illinois leaving many homes completely uninhabitable. Despite this setback,LaGrage continued to grow with development taking place along Broadway Avenue (now Wilson Boulevard) into what is now downtown Chicago including two housing developments called Lakeshore Drive and Hyde Park Place which are still standing today next to McCormick Place Shopping Center. In 1927-1928 construction began on what would become Northwestern University's first building on campus - now known as Addison Hall - which would eventually include music classrooms and other Academic buildings including Fine Arts Building (now Brown Hall), Business Administration Building (now Wojciechowski Hall), Economics Building (now Geisel Tower), Physics Building (now Hearst Tower) and Health Sciences Building (now Weinreb Tower). The city of Chicago annexed portions of Sangamon County in 1961 allowing for more contiguous development within city limits with no penalty for former rural residents who chose not to incorporation into the city or who moved out during annexation proceedings
