La Grange Park is a small town located in LaGrange County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,463 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Indianapolis– Marion– St. Joseph metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in LaGrange Park was John Overstreet, who arrived in 1837 and built a log cabin on the east side of what is now State Road 7. Overstreet's son-in-law, Hiram Halleck (1811-1900), also founded La Grange Park with his family in 1847. The name comes from two sources: one source says that "la grange" means 'a grove of trees,' while another suggests that it derives from an early French title for a parish church—Bourg de la Ronde—which in turn might have been derived from the Italian term "grana." In 1851, John Kapp bought land near where State Road 7 crosses CSX tracks and erected a small frame home known as Kapp's Grove; he died there six years later. Two other early settlers were George Washington and James Guthrie (c1830-1914). By 1870, La Grange Park had about 100 residents and consisted of three housing developments: Kapp's Grove on the north side of SR 7 between Fourth Street and I-465; Overstreet's Cabin on CR 1 south of Fourth Street; and Guthrie's Brushy Fork Farm on upper CR 1 above Fourth Street. A post office was established at La Grage Park in 1872; by 1880, it hadOutput over 2200 letters per year In 1905, when LaGrangian Sylvester Sellers purchased land east of I-465 along SR 7 near present day US 12th Avenue for $10 per acre ($/acre), he began to develop what would become Sellers Field which contained tennis courts, swimming pool, clubhouse and other building elements still standing today In 1916 Sellers' widow sold him additional land extending east to US 12th Avenue including what is now Weldon Drive; this allowed for addition of four more tennis courts(later called Royal Courts) as well as new facilities such as a movie theater(the first film screening ever held at Weldon Drive)andball diamond(later renamed Pritchard Stadium). By 1926 all but one structure within Salears Field had been replaced or demolished: the old movie theater which remains extant today as Kingwood Cinemas
