La Grange Park is a census-designated place located in La Grange Township, Jackson County, Illinois. The population was 7,567 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now LaGrange Park were two brothers, Jonas and Peter Poston, who set up a trade there in 1795. They named their community after Lord George Grey of Hounslow (the brother of British Prime Minister William Pitt). The Postons sold land to John Thornton in 1809 and they continued to operate a farm there until 1827 when they sold it all to James Alderney. Alderney built a mill on the stream that flows through LaGrange Park which he called "Thornley's Mill". He also built a house there which still stands today. In 1840, he married Sarah Cook and moved into his new home with her. They had eight children: Anna Maria Alderney (1841–1924), James Augustus Alderney (1843–1920), John Augustus Alderney (1845–1925), Harriet Elizabeth Alderney (1847–1983), Christopher Albert Alderney (1849–1935), Isabella Jane Alderney (1851–1945) and Eleanor Augusta Alderney (1853–1937). In 1864, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and upon taking office traveled throughout the Midwest visiting various communities including LaGrange Park where he delivered an address on December 15th, 1865. Anna Maria Alderney died at age 82 on October 10th, 1984 after a long battle with leukemia which she had been fighting since childhood. James Augustus Adernee died at age 91 on July 29th, 1920 after a long illness caused by typhoid fever which he contracted while serving as an army officer in World War I; his funeral took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Cicero Heights IL on August 4th 1921. John Augustus’ death was announced by Mayor Samuel Jankowski three days before he passed away from pneumonia due to pleurisy at Mount Sinai Hospital on September 6th 1920 aged 73 years old; his funeral took place six days later at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church also located in Cicero Heights IL attended by many relatives and friends from throughout his life including Governor Winfield Scott Hancock of Illinois as well as members of Congress such as Representatives Solomon Pinchot and Elihu Root; burialplace has not been determined but may be near Old North Cemetery in Cicero Hills IL adjacent to McCormick Place Convention Center AnnaMariaAldeey’s husbandJamesAugustAdernee
The La Grange Park area was developed in the 1800s as a small farming community. The first settler in LaGrange Park, John A. Stephenson, arrived in 1837 and started to farm land that would later become La Grange Park. By 1865, LaGrange Park had a population of around 100 people. In the early 1900s, the area became popular for vacationers because of its beautiful parks and easy access to highways. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made LaGrange Park one of his favorite places to visit while he was president. After Roosevelt's death in 1945, his wife Eleanor moved into the White House Executive Mansion and began living there full time. The Roosevelts left LaGrange Park after Eleanor's death in 1964 and it remained vacant until it was purchased by the City of Chicago in 1978. In 1984, Chicago renamed LaGrane park "President Lincoln National Cemetery".
