The first settler in what would become Kewanee was John Welsh who arrived in 1836. He founded a cabin on land that he purchased from the government for $200 (). Welsh named his new settlement after his young daughter Keowanee (Kane County being then part of Indiana). A post office called Welshburg was established in 1839, but full operation wasn't until 1840 when Amos Eaton opened an agency there under the auspices of Congress for Postmasters General (). By 1860 there were fifteen residents living in Walesburg; it had grown to twenty-one by 1870 (). In 1871 John Tate bought 3000 acres (1 km²) around what is now known as Welshburg from Amos Eaton for $225 (). Tate began developing this land into what would become Kewanee. In 1872 he organized what would be known as "the Territorial Legislature" which functioned as an interim legislature during the absence of a regular one due to lack of members. On November 3rd election day three men were elected: James Wittenberg as clerk, Daniel O'Neill as recorder and Isaiah Stiles as justice of peace () On January 15th 1873 territorial boundaries were defined with assistance from George Stephenson (), Superintendent of Public Instruction () Aftermaths included riots among settlers over higher taxes (); by 1880 only 9%of population lived within township limits (. An effort was made to reestablish municipal autonomy through incorporation but this failed). In 1898 paper mills became available thanks to installation by Elijah Ford (); however they closed by 1902 because wool production declined markedly (). Cotton gin operations started up again thanks to Revkin & Sons beginning 1915; however they too closed after World War I . The last paper mill operated until 1938 yielding about 480 tons/day before closure due to high costs associated with replacement technology . Manufacturing went into decline following World War II with declines in both cotton gins and paper mills; however some light industry did continue until 1971 when all six remaining plants shut down . In recent years there has been resurgence with several small businesses starting up along Randolph Street SE including Cushman & Wakefield LLP., Pinnacle Foods Inc., American Eagle Outfitters etc.; however those businesses have not yet achieved significant growth
Kewanee was founded in 1836 by John Quincy Adams and his family. The city is named after Kewanee Creek, which flows through the city. The first settler in the city was James Fenton, who arrived in 1836. In 1840, the city was renamed for General Andrew Jackson.
