Kewanee, Illinois was founded in 1824 by the Kewanee brothers. The area that is now Kewanee was first settled by the Shawnees and Pottawatomies. In 1827, a mission was established at Kewanee and from then until 1840, the town was governed by religious missionaries. In 1839, the United States acquired land west of Chicago in what is now Indiana, and in 1841, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a military post on the site of Kewanee. The Area Company (later known as army) erected Fort Dearborn on November 1, 1841. The post served as a base for operations during the American Civil War. On July 16th, 1865, Fort Dearborn was surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant after two years of fighting. Kewanee continued to be a center of commerce until about 1880 when it lost its status as an agricultural center due to increased production in neighboring Carbondale andNormalville. However, there are still some remnants of early settler life remaining today such as KEWANEE GAS STATION which opened in 1907 and remains one of Illinois' oldest commercial enterprises
