Kewanee is a small town in northwest Illinois. The population was 3,686 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. Kewanee is home to Northwestern Illinois University and the Kewanee-based Kane County Agricultural District. The first settlers in this area were farmers who arrived around 1836. In 1841, John Cook set up a grist mill on the east side of Kewanee Creek. By 1846, there were ten blacksmiths and two sawmills operating in the community. In 1870, Wm Henson opened a flour mill on McDonough Street across from what is now Northwestern Illinois University. This mill became one of the largest flour mills in America and produced bread for many Chicagoans and Americans abroad. In 1899, Wm Ladd opened another flour mill on State Street in Kewanee which became one of the most successful small towns in Kane County until it closed its doors in 1978 due to diminishing demand for flour products statewide because of rising costs associated with World War II industrial production nationwide. In 1925, Julius Kuhlman established a dry goods store at 6th and State Streets which soon became known as "the Hardware Store of Kewanee." Kuhlman's store was also one of the few stores open late into night during that time period because he would stay open until midnight selling groceries such as milk, eggs, butter and other items not typically available during daylight hours. This hardware store was also an important cultural center for KEWANEE during that time as it served as a meeting place for neighborhood groups responsible for maintaining streetlights, repairing sidewalks etceteraetera... .It was here that members of these groups would come together to discuss common issues or just chat about their day while eating lunch outside or inside Kuhlman's store windows over fresh produce from his garden - something that still happens today!
