Kewanee is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The Kewanee Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings district that includes the downtown area and most of the surrounding rural areas. It is also home to Northwestern Illinois University. The first known settler in what is now Kane County was John Charles McDonough, who arrived in 1833 from New York City. He named his new land "Kane County" after hisuncle, James Kekiong Calhoun (1792-1868), one of the founders of Chicago. A post office called Kewanee was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The first school in what is now Kane County was build near present day Elmhurst by Drury and another group of settlers on October 15, 1838. It was called Indian School #1 and served grades 1-8. In 1840, when Indiana became part of the United States, Congress passed an act creating a public school system for the entire country; this act became law on March 4th, 1841 and Indian School #8 opened at Elmhurst with 35 students on October 15th via subscription from local farmers/voters. On July 11th & 12th 1861 an large crowd attended a meeting held by the Board of Education to select trustees for building #5 which would become KEWANEE HISTORIC DISTRICT#1 A post office called "Kaneville" was established at Ewingesville on February 26th 1865; it lasted until it too was discontinued on May 2nd 1865 On September 5th 1870 Robert Crain built cabin #4 along current day North Main Street just east of town limits becoming one of first residents thereabouts That same year Maud Fenton purchased 640 acres (24ha) northeast of town limits from Deighton Chauncey Barnhart for $60000 cash + 7% interest per annumlater renamed as Township Of Kewanee & Wabash It wasn’t until 1888 that real estate developer Jobe Senter moved into town Limits & began developing land northwest towards modern day Carbondale started selling lots starting at $6000 with development permits issued starting around 1893 which eventually led to today’s downtown area being developed with over 100 businesses currently located within its boundaries including Northwestern Illinois University

The town of Kewanee, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John P. Ketcham and his wife Olive. The community was named after a creek that ran through the area. In 1845, the county seat of Kane County was moved to Kewanee from Belleville because of population growth in that area. On January 1, 1860, the town incorporated as a city. On July 1, 1865, Kewanee became one of twelve districts within the new National City Bank system. The bank headquarters were located in downtown Kewanee until it moved to Oak Lawn in 1978. Kane County lost its county seat and status as an urban center when Douglas County became organized on February 15, 1975. On December 22, 1995, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted 5-2 to change the name of their business district - Community Bank District - to Kane County District #4 for all purposes including elections and government functions.
