Kewanee, Illinois is a town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is a small farming community with a few thousand residents and two schools: one public and one private. The first settlers in what would become Kewanee were farmers who came to the area in 1839 from Decatur County, Indiana. They named their new community after General James Kew (16 May 1775 – 11 October 1847), an American Revolutionary War general who died at Quebec on 8 October 1847 during the Battle of neoconqueror Heights. In 1860, John Crain built his home on the banks of the Rock River near present day east side of town. The village began to grow rapidly as people started to arrive from all over Illinois looking for opportunities to farm and build homes. By 1870 there were more than fifty families living in Kewanee Village. The original school building was built in 1865 by Obediah Sheehan for $4 per acre (one dollar per student). That same year saw the opening of Illinois State Normal School (now Northwestern University) which moved into its current location on Main Street in 1903. That same year also saw incorporation of Kewanee Village as a townsite with a total population of twenty-two people. In 1907, ground was broken for what would become Home Field Hospital which would serve as headquarters for many years until it was replaced by United States Army Medical Center West Urbana Campus which opened its doors in 1974 In 1924, Mrs Jane Addams donated land adjacent to her home on Elmwood Avenue for use as a training ground for nurses called Nurse’s Training School; today Home Field Hospitalstill operates out of that facility primarily providing health care services to military personnel stationed hereabouts . Kewanee is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,509 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kewanee was founded in 1836 by General David Dixon as a post office on the Chicago and Indiana Railroad. Kewanee has been served by the Kewanee School District since 1868. The first permanent settler in what is now Kewanee was George Dyer in 1836. He built a cabin on the banks of the Little Kanawha River, about two miles (3 km) east of present-day KEWANEE. Dixon named his new settlement after his brother-in-law, Sir Edmund Kirby of Kilkenny, Ireland who had come to America to improve landowning opportunities for Irish Americans. In 1840, John Ladd moved to what is now KEWANEE from Pekin and purchased 640 acres (240 ha) near present-day Woodstock Road and marks the beginning of what would become an agricultural region around this town. A Post Office Act passed by Congress on July 12, 1841 established a post office at KEWANEE under the name "Dixon". On December 10th of that year general David Dixon arrived at KEWANEE from Nauvoo with news that Joseph Smith had been martyred and all evidence suggesting this occurred near Palmyra on December 24th or 25th resulted in Dixon's arrest and confinement until he could be brought before court which he did not attend because he was too ill to leave Nauvoo despite pleas from friends such as Brigham Young When Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, many settlers wanted him to appoint a military governor for Illinois so they could protect their homes but no such appointment came through so they turned their attention to building sawmills and grist mills which were soon successful due to good ole Ulysses S Grant's efforts when he became Governor of Illinois In 1865 local farmers formed The National Grains Marketing Board which marketed flour and other grains throughout Northwestern Illinois The townsite here dates back even further when Daniel Boone found white oak trees growing along Canandaigua Creek . In 1670 John Winthrop founded Harvard University just east of downtown Boston Massachusetts Soil scientist Dr Charles Eliot took soil samples from around the area including those taken from where Dixons cabin used to stand back in 1840 while grading school property northeast corner Main Street & First Street appeared on plat map dated September 11 1861 as XXXXXXXXXXX Indian Reservation

Kewanee was founded in 1847 by John H. Kewanee and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after a river that flowed through the area. In 1863, Kewanee was incorporated as a village. On December 15, 1901, Kewanee became a city when it merger with neighboring Westville.
