Kewanee, Illinois is a town and city in the St. Clair County of southwest Michigan, United States. The population was 9,582 at the 2000 census. Kewanee is part of the Flint metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Kewanee were Frenchmen who arrived on the Great Lakes in 1667. They built Fort Michilimackinac (later renamed Detroit) on the east side of the Ottawa River and called it "Kiwanee." A post office was established at Kewanee in 1827, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1887, a group of men from Decatur Township formed the village of Kiewanee to serve as its cultural center and main market for goods produced by their townshipmates. The first store opened in 1888 and continued to operate until 1992. It was also during this time that Kiewanee's first school was built - a one-room schoolhouse located on Main Street which served grades 1-8 until 1954 when it was replaced by a more modern building on present day Wright Road which currently houses administrative offices for St Clair County government. In 1902, an additions wing was added to the original school house which served grades 9-12 until 1978 when that wing also became obsolete due to annexations within Kiewanee itself; however, portions of it remain extant as part of Parkview Elementary School #2 today. In 1907, Demolition began on what are now Peconic Avenue Extension #2 (now Wright Road) & Demolition commenced on Main Street Extension #1 (now First Street) which connected with each other forming what is now Second Streets between them making up Third Streets today; these two streets were formerly known as State street between them before being changed back to their current names following annexation into KiewanEE itself following fire damage done to both buildings by local firefighters while attempting suppression efforts after an early morning tornado touched down just east of town late one evening resulting in over $6000 worth ($ at that time) in damages! On December 5th 1909 a large fire destroyed most or all buildings including churches within downtown/market district caused great loss & much destruction with estimated losses above $100000 ($ still very much estimable today). It took many weeks before insurance companies could come forward & rebuild primarily using salvaged materials so although reconstruction officially began April 12th 1910 & finished July 2nd 1910 insurance finally paid off almost 3 years later! A new Masonic Lodge No 4 had been constructed earlier adjacent to old Masonic Temple prior to explosion inside Masonic Hall killing 6 members!! This event has been mythologized ever since (& still widely accepted), even though no evidence exists supporting such claims! Today little remains beyond foundations except for some few bricks left over from older construction
