In 1871, Kewanee was the site of one of the first gunfights in America. A group of white men led by Jesse James had planned to rob a black man named John Brown at a nearby farm. When they were met with resistance, the men began firing into the air, wounding several people before turning their weapons on themselves. One bullet hit Abraham Lincoln in the shoulder, killing him instantly.
Kewanee is a small village in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is located on the Fox River in the heart of the Iron Country region. The community is named after John H. Kewenet, who donated land for a Methodist church and school in 1855. The Village of Kewanee was organized on November 1, 1868 from parts of North Manchester and Vernon townships. It had a total population of 326 when it was annexed by Milwaukee on February 17, 1915. At that time it was one of only two villages in Ozaukee County not having an incorporated town status; the other being West Allis (which became Wauwatosa). Kewanee's first store opened in 1869 and its first post office was established in 1870. In 1895 it became an incorporated town with a population of 2,021 people when East Allis merged into it; however this merger did not take effect until 1915 due to disagreements over incorporation boundaries between Kewanee and East Allis authorities. With its annexation into Milwaukee as part of that city's growth following World War Iz there were numerous changes to both the village's demographics and physical fabric In recent decades many businesses have closed down or been sold off within what used to be called "the old mill" area which now contains apartments and offices close to Interstate 94 Local residents continue to participate heavily in their local government through village voting procedures even though they are no longer represented on the board or governing body
