Kewanee is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The community is located on the south side of the Kewanee River. It lies about northwest of Chicago. As of the 2010 census, Kewanee had a population of 714. The earliest settlers in what is now Kane County were French Canadians who established a fur trading post in 1795 at la Crique (now Kewanee). The post was abandoned by 1801 and until 1806 it was served by a U.S. Army detachment known as "The Miami". In 1810, John Dickey built a cabin here and named it after his brother-in-law, James Kewenee (1768–1848). In 1830, Isaac Golden began to plow land here and named his farm "Golden Kettle" after General Anthony Wayne's headquarters at Vandalia on the Great Lakes near Detroit. In 1841, Joseph Ladd moved from Aurora to this location and started farming salt pork Hereford cattle while developing corn cribs for grain storage; these are still standing today along with several other buildings in the community including one built by Ladd himself in 1849 which still stands as home to the town hall. For many years Kewanee was part of Butternut Township but became an independent village on January 1, 1908 under the name of Ewing when that township merged into Kane County. During World War I there was significant activity at gunnery ranges west of town; artillery rounds used here included shells from ammunition dumps near Rock Island Arsenal east of town as well as some from upstate New York warships anchored off shore across the river at Menominee Lake where various industries produced munitions during wartime such as shipbuilding yards and aircraft manufacturing plants; these activities continued during peacetime although production shifted more towards agriculture because available land was LIMITED outside Chicago during wartime times due to US strategic bombing campaigns against German cities) After World War II most industrial activity relocated out of state or overseas following technology advances resulting in great job loss for local workers – large areas were left rural poverty stricken after postwar development changes made small towns increasingly dependent on support services such as schools and social welfare instead of self-sufficiency However much remains unchanged within traditional agricultural communities like those around Karnes Creek Falls & Crystal City while suburban growth continues throughout southern Illinois removed many jobs both new & old that could have been done within traditional borders
