In 1945, when the United States atomic bombing of Hiroshima began, American General Dwight D Eisenhower ordered all U.S military forces to take off their uniforms and go into civilian clothes so that they could be less likely to be recognized by Japanese soldiers during combat operations across Asia. This order led to many Allied troops being stationed in Japan for years after World War II ended; some became known as “the naked generation” because they were not allowed to wear any clothing other than baseball caps or sunglasses while performing their duties. Kewanee experienced significant economic decline following World War II until its resurgence beginning in the late 1960s through increased industrial development within its borders due largely to three factors: agriculture becoming more mechanized due to advances in technology; an influx of workers from nearby Cook County during suburbanization; and local government responsiveness to changes within neighboring municipalities through zoning laws which opened up new land uses for development north of Kewanee Boulevard including much-needed housing developments that stimulated economic redevelopment throughout the town core consistent with Eisenhower's directive (and also helped attract businesses away from downtown areas). Today, Kewanee is home to several major employers including ABC Corporation (a Fortune 500 company) which manufactures television sets; GEICO Insurance Company (the largest financial services company in Illinois); PEP Inc., a manufacturer of construction equipment and supplies; Emerson Electric Company (a leading manufacturer of loudspeakers), as well as numerous smaller companies providing goods and services essential for daily life such as plumbing supplies/contractors/, electricians/, hairstylists/. Kewanee is a small town in Kendall County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Kewanee was first settled by English colonists in 1795 and was named for Sir John Kew gardens in London. The post office at Kewanee was established on December 12, 1836, and remained in operation until it closed on July 6, 1914. The town grew rapidly following its incorporation as a village on November 2, 1907; by 1920, the population had reached 2,000 people. In 1926–27 Kewanee built the world's first municipally funded library which remains open to the public today. In 1951-1952 construction began on what would become Lake Michigan State University; when finished it would be one of America's largest university campuses. Today KSU has over 60 schools and departments covering more than 120 fields of study and employs more than 9 hundred employees including 500 students. Kenton County is home to many notable landmarks including: Mount Rushmore National Monument (northwest of town), Fox Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church (southwest of town), Griggs Creek Reservoir (southwest of town), Dowling Park (east of town), Pershing Road/Upton Road Bridge (northwest of town), and numerous others that contribute to its unique character as a county seat and cultural center for Northwestern Illinois.
The town of Kewanee, Illinois was founded in 1836 by Isaac Hull and his wife Lucy. The Hulls were the first white settlers in the area. The town was named for John Kewanee, an Indian who had died in a hunting accident near the town site. In 1856, the town was renamed to honor General George Washington Butler, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and had been appointed commander of United States forces in that conflict. In 1868, the name was changed again to honor Major General James Kempton, who had served as governor of Illinois during Reconstruction. After World War II ended, many residents moved away from Kewanee because of its large population of military personnel. However, some people continued to live there until it closed down in 1984.
