The village of Galesburg was founded just north of present-day KEWANEE on October 3rd, 1865 by James Elam from Galesburg Township and four other men under the name "Galesburg Township Land Company". James Elam served as its president until his death on July 6th, 1924. On January 9th 1919 Charles Fenton purchased 200 acres (0 hectares) east of present-day town limits from Harry Laughlin for $1 cash with no mortgage or shares payable until 20 years later when all obligations would have been paid off through an estate tax levied against all estates over $5 million inclusive at that time).
