Kewanee, Illinois is a city located in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 44,605 at the 2010 census and is the most populous city in Kuell County, which includes Kewanee Township. The name "Kewanee" derived from Ojibwa words meaning "place of many waterfalls" or "lake of many perches." The first white settler in what is now Kewanee Township was Nicholas Clarke in 1812. In 1827, his brother-in-law David Black purchased land east of present day Kewanee from Chief Winnebago for $100 cash and 10 acres (4 hectares). Black built a log cabin on the site, called Fort Clarke. He also erected a stone wall around his property to protect it from Indians who frequented the area for hunting and fishing purposes. In 1830, John Wills bought two tracts of land adjacent to Fort Clarke for $150 each. He named them Prairie View and White Sands Hills after two nearby waterfalls that he saw while driving through the area on horseback. Wills developed these lands into one large farm which he called Waterloo Station when he moved his family there in 1836。 The town of Waterloo began as a small community near where pioneer John Wills had settled his farm six miles northeast of today's Kewanee during the early 1840s when several families started homesteading along Big Muddy Creek southeast of Waterloo Station (). One group of settlers named their new community after General George Armstrong Custer who had died during an Indian war raid nearpresent day Warsaw, Indiana (). Another group decided to name their new settlement after General James Hays whose forces had fought against Native Americans at Battle Cry () near present day Council Bluffs, Iowa (). Today’s intersection between Big Muddy Creek Road and Old National Road marks this historical event.. Waterloo became known as Kiewaiee following its incorporation as a village by act Of The Legislature Of Illinois On December 12th 1861 (.pdf) . The name was chosen because local citizens could not agree on a common name for their town-. It wasn't until May 1865 that voters approved changing the spelling from Waterloo to Kiewaiee due to confusion over neighboring towns with similar names such as LaPorte () and Bloomington (). However, because of its small size, little development took place within the town until after World War II whenroads were built connecting it with other larger cities in south central Illinois; this helped give rise to modern day commercial opportunities for residents of KewanEE including tourism (particularly during summer months). A local shopping center has been developed downtown since 2007 called "Town Square".
