In 1802, General James Wilkinson founded an outpost on the Wabash River near present-day Kewanee and named it after his uncle, Captain John Wilkinson of HMS "Eagle." The first permanent settler in what would become DeKalb County was Isaac Beasley in 1816. He donated land to the government for a courthouse and jail. In 1821, Kewanee's first school opened as a one-room log cabin with six students. It was rebuilt in 1836 using logs from neighboring LaPorte Township's mill pond for its building and desks. That year also marked the opening of America's first railroad line between Peoria and Chicago; Kewanee was located on the Texas & Illinois Railroad (now Conrail). The town's growth accelerated from that point on until it became an agricultural center by World War I when more than half of all agricultural products produced in Cook County came from here. During World War II, much of Kewanee was destroyed by bombing raids from American forces fighting in Europe; however, most buildings still stand today including both the original school building and post office Annex #1 which housed mail delivery services until 1967 when they moved to Rockford City Hall Annex #2 which still stands today as a branch library serving residents of adjoining townships including East Stroudsburg and West Allis! Following World War II there increased demand for postwar housing following America's economic boom but development instead led to increasing traffic congestion within downtown boundaries that resulted in numerous unsuccessful attempts over several decades to bring light rail or bus service into town limits only for it eventually being pulled back due to cost overruns while concurrently reducing enrollment at local high schools! Finally defeated by trends within city government rather than grassroots activism over time – with some residents starting efforts themselves – voters passed a $20 million bond referendum in 2006 authorizing construction of an expressway through downtown called "The Loop" that has since followed suit as plans are currently underway for yet another expressway extension (this one called “The Connector”) that will run southeastward through town limits just east of Interstate 80 concurrent with existing US 7 southbound accessaging facilities!

Kewanee is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 46,621 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is the second-largest city in Kane County after Aurora. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Kewanee was John Davidson who arrived in 1836 and named his farm "Doris." In 1839, he married Anna Hodge and together they started a small grocery store on the current site of First Methodist Church. After John's death in 1840, Anna continued to run the store until her own death in 1865. Their son George ran the business until it failed around 1880. In 1871, Abram Kinney donated land to build a post office which opened on December 12th of that year. The town name originated from an Indian word meaning "place where deer grazed." A new sawmill was built by Wm Clements & Brothers about 1870 which began producing lumber for buildings and other items beginning around 1875 including some for General Harrison's troops during their campaign against Native Americans near Vandalia (nowokia). When this mill closed down around 1916 it left behind a large pile of lumber that has been used as part of many structures downtown including First Methodist Church since its construction date in 1876. The first automobile dealership west of the Mississippi River was established here by Duesenberg dealers Harry Laughlin and Frank Hinklein back in 1919 when Kewanee was still known as Sodertowne (later renamed Midway Heights). From these beginnings through 1965 KEWANEE HAS BEEN THE PLACE WHERE MOTORCYCLE'S FIRST HEADQUARTERS WERE FOUNDED IN AMERICA!
The first white settlers in Kewanee, Illinois were David and Esther Wheeler. The Wheelers erected a log cabin on the east side of the Kewanee River in 1814. In 1815, they moved to the west side of the river, where they built a larger cabin. In 1834, the Wheelers sold their farm to Moses Woodruff and his family. The Wrolfs farmed the land for many years. In 1870, John A. Dever established a mill on the Kewanee River. The Dever family ran the mill until it was destroyed by fire in 1911. In 1916, Harry Ladd bought the mill and continued running it until it was closed in 1944.
