In 1865, another group of men from Kewanee formed the Historical Society of Illinois to preserve Illinois’s firearm culture. This society helped collect antique firearms, documents related to firearm ownership and storage practices, historical photos and prints, as well as museum exhibits about Illinois’s gun history. Kewanee is a city in the Illinois River Valley in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kewanee were French traders and missionaries who passed through the area in 1672. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette named it after his native village of Kaynacook on Cape Cod. The name may be derived from an early Miami word meaning "a place where young trees grow." In 1818, General Philip Sheridan moved his military forces southward along the Illinois River and discovered white settlers living near what is now Kewanee. They called this new land Prairie du Chien because of a bend in the river there. A small community developed around Fort Michigan on the banks of the river, which became known as Kankakee after General Sheridan's headquarters (now downtown). After Indian Wars between American and Native American forces, most settlers left for other parts of Illinois or Missouri during the 19th century; however, a few families held onto their homesteads until about 1920. The first post office in Kankakee was established in 1827. By 1840, nearly all residents had relocated to central IL due to changing agricultural technology and industry within miles of main markets such as Chicago and Cincinnati; only a few remained at home scattered among remote villages like Benton Harbor and Georgetown (later White Bear Lake). Withthe arrival of railroad service throughout much of IL during this time period- including Regular steam locomotives running between Chicago & St Louis in 1868- many farmers abandoned their homes altogether to take advantage of new opportunities offered by railroads that could bring goods closer to them than ever before. This rural exodus continued into ensuing decades with little change occurin settlement patterns outside central IL except for very occasional arrivals from outlying areas such as DeKalb County & Cook County westward into our state line.. However when Interstate 90 was completed connecting I-90 with I-94 just north of town via US 65 bypassing it all these changes began.. These recent arrivals have largely been assimilated over time creating today's mixed racial identity which has made building interracial relationships difficult but not impossible given its history . In 1930 two groups working independently came up with a plan for developing farmland east side Wabash River about 2 miles west from original site then being purchased by City Council granted approval November 15th 1930 platting 1/4 mile wide strip down road leading east from original site extending one half mile beyond boundary line platting raised road extension easterly 5 feet beyond line shown on map 3/4 mile long

In 1845, Kewanee became a village and was consolidated with other villages in Illini County. The population of Kewanee peaked at 10,000 in 1920 but has since declined to 7,500 residents today. The town is located on the western edge of the Illinois River Valley and rests on an ancient limestone plateau that forms the backdrop to one of the most rugged regions in Illinois. The valley is flanked by mountains that rise to heights greater than 6,000 feet (1,800 meters). Precipitation falls primarily during winter months, when snow covers large portions of the valley floor and well aboveground water resources are scarce. One of the earliest homes built in Kewanee were log cabins which have been preserved as part of downtown Kewanee's history. A number of small businesses have also been located throughout downtown including a post office (1845), grocery store (1912), bank (1914-present), doctor’s office (1920), movie theater (1969), ice cream parlor (1974) and more recently a hotel/motel complex known as Gateway inn & suites for guests staying near Chicago or Decatur IL airport
