Kewanee is known for its agricultural industry and its location on the banks of the Kankakee River. The first European to visit what are now Kewanee and neighboring villages was French explorer Pierre Marquette in 1679. He named the villages after his patron saint, St. François Xavier. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1764 and began building churches and schools in what are today Kewanee and neighboring villages. The first school was built on current-day Market Street in 1768/69 by Father Claude Doiron; it served as an academy until 1809 when it became a parish church under Bishop Jacques-Cartier de Lavalville. In 1806, General James Hays founded Fort Dearborn on land he had acquired from Captain John O'Hara during the War of 1812 as part of his ill-fated Missouri Compromise deal with President Andrew Jackson. As part of that deal, Hays agreed to cede all Indian lands west of Deming Creek (now Daley Park) to Kansas Territory as long as they remained under military control; this included most of present-day Cook County including parts of Kane County and Lake County east of Deming Creek In 1814/15, General Winfield Scott assigned Captains John Sowersby and David Ritchie to explore claims extending along both sides of the Kankakee River southward into Indiana Territory; their reports led to Scott's decision not to pursue development along that river corridor In 1816/17 Governor Thomas Mifflin issued a proclamation calling for settlers to come across state lines "to establish tributaries or branches settlements" within Illinois boundaries; many people responded to this call This period saw some large landowners such as Gideon Welles purchase up large tracts southeast of present-day Chicago taking advantage of new transportation methods such as steamboats which made traveling far distances much easier than ever before By 1850, over one hundred thousand people lived within Illinois boundaries including twenty thousand farmers who grew corn, wheat, beans, potatoes etc . And yet despite these advances there were still many challenges faced by those living within this expansive territory especially given its remoteness from major markets . One particularly infamous case occurred in1847 when Josephine Baker (née McCormick), daughterof prosperous planter Josiah Quincy Jr., married Anthony Peabody (brotherof Nathaniel Peabody). After years spent struggling against powerful men seeking power through force or money they finally achieved parity with white individuals through political rights while also gaining social recognition through their education opportunities Many residents hereabouts paid taxes even though they could not vote due primarily to lack thereof while others like brothers Moses Goodson & Solomon Pavy fought wars for their country during the Civil War only To return home soon afterwards Lumpkin County seat vacated by Springfield Armory founder Elijah Muhammad

Kewanee was founded in 1847 by white men prospecting for coal near the confluence of the Kankakee and White Rivers. It became a town on April 14, 1851 when it amalgamated with neighboring village of Walnut to form the new city of Kewanee. The city name has been changed three times: first to Hawkeye (1954), then to Big Rock (1984), and finally to its current name in 2000.
