Kewanee, Illinois is a small town in the Central Illinois region of the United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2000 census. It is located in Kane County and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Kewanee is known for its agricultural products, especially corn and soybeans. The first settler in what would become Kewanee was Levi Parsons who arrived in 1836. He founded a farm on the east side of town about two miles (3 km) from where he lived today. In 1847, John Glover settled near what is now downtown Kewanee after moving from Watertown, Massachusetts. In 1870, James Atherton purchased land east of downtown from Parsons to build his gristmill and sawmill on Holmes Creek. The mill closed in 1902 but reopened as an antique store in 1926 before being bought by Jeraldine Schnitzer in 1985 and closing again several years later. In 1906, Harry Haggerty opened a grocery store called "The Hardware Store" which became one of the most popular businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1978 due to lack of sales or fire insurance coverage during hard economic times. After World War II ended, many Kewanee residents relocated to Chicago to take advantage of post-war opportunities including manufacturing jobs that blossomed postwar suburbia like Aurora IL and Oak Lawn IL; however many residents remain deeply rooted here with their families who still grow crops and raise livestock on their lands today.

Kewanee, Illinois is a small town located in the state of Illinois. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is one of the oldest towns in Illinois and has been around since 1837. Kewanee is also home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, one of the largest universities in Illinois. The first settlers in what would become Kewanee came from Great Britain around 1787. They were led by Captain John McLaren who built a cabin on an old trading post near the current site of Kewanee. The original settler name for this location was "Dalhousie." By 1837, all English settlers had departed for unknown reasons and it became known as "Kevanee." In 1839, Colonel George Stephenson founded Champaign County and named it after himself and his friend Major General James Wilkinson (1775-1846). In 1840, Stephenson donated land to Champaign County that would become known as Kewanee Township. In 1845, two new towns were formed within Champaign County; Rome and Belleville. Both villages were named after American generals who had fought during the Mexican–American War: George Armstrong Custer (1813-1885) and Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1914). In 1850, residents of Belleville voted to incorporate as a village which they did on February 14th of that year. In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of America, he appointed Judge David Davis as the first justice of circuit court for Kane County. On October 15th 1861, Davis died suddenly in office at age 50 from a heart attack while vacationing with his family in Norfolk Island where he was serving as United States Minister without portfolio under President Lincoln’s administration. His death left Kane County vacant until 1865 when Judge Jens Christian Størnholm was appointed to fill his vacancy on December 1st instead of going through election because no other candidates could be found by November 15th due to political scandal involving Governor Simon Cameron following Senator Daniel Webster’s victory over Levi Morton in the presidential election that year Kane County then received its first judicial officer when Judge John Pemberton was appointed Circuit Court Judge on January 3rd 1865 replacing David Davis Jr.. At this time there were only sixjudicial officers across all 11 counties in Illinois due to consolidation efforts between Cook county (then made up entirely of Chicago), Johnson county (made up mostly of Joliet), La Salle county (made up mostly out west Chicago), Sangamon county (made up mostly out east Chicago), Skokiecounty (made up mainly out west Milwaukee) and Warren county (all but merged into DuPageCounty some time before 1900). On July 2nd 1870 – during Reconstruction – African Americans began registering to vote through agent provocateurs working behind white lines outside polling places throughout southern Illinois following passage by Congress Heights State Constitutional Convention #2 dealing with voting rights for black people in newly acquired IL following US Civil War despite heavy resistance from Southern Democrats culminating with passage by referendum resulting in admission into Union Territory following endof hostilities During these years many businesses closed down including those run by Captain McLaren who operated a ferry service between Evansville and Decatur called "The Golden Fleece" until his business went bankrupt due to competition from marketing agencies set up by Northern Republicans looking for votes during these difficult times .Captain McLaren also ran unsuccessfully for Mayor OF Evansville against incumbent Averill Harriman twice . He served three terms consecutively from 1871-73 & then again from 1899-1901 .He passed away peacefully at home on May 12th 1901 aged 92 years old
The first white man to live in Kewanee, Illinois was David Whitcomb in 1810. The town was founded by Jason Granger and Samuel Andrews. The first school was established in 1812 by Rev. John Green. The first post office was opened in 1814 by Wm. Trenholm.
