Kewanee is a small town located in Macomb County, Illinois. The population was 2,609 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by Captain Samuel Kewanee and his family. It became a village in 1903 and then a town in 1925. On July 10, 1957, it merged with Danville to form the city of Danville. The first post office in Kewanee was established on December 12, 1855, by Capt Samuel Kewanee and Jno Hickey. The current post office building was built in 1912 and is one of two buildings remaining from when the village of Kewanee was merged with Danville. KEWANEE THE CITIZENSHIP OF ILLINOIS In 1847 Captain Samuel Kewnnee settled on a tract of land that he named "Evelee." He soon realized that this location would be ideal for trade with neighboring towns because it had wide open spaces and easy access to water supplies. In 1850-1851 Captain Samuel formed a partnership with James Stevenson called the "Stevenson Trading Company." This company traded goods between Evelee and other villages within miles of the town site. In October 1853 Captain Samuel donated 7 acres (25 ha) to build a courthouse/town square which he named after himself - "Samuel Ewen Courthouse Square". The cornerstone for this structure was laid on November 3rd, 1854 by Mayor John Matson assisted by First Class Rev George Stephenson (the brother of James Stevenson). The first court proceedings were held here on December 12th, 1855 under Judge Drury's charge! By 1863 the courthouse had been moved to its present location within walking distance of all major businesses in the town limits! Built as an example for future villages to follow, both Evelee and contemporary Danville featured grandiose architecture including government buildings made out of white marble imported from Italy! From 1865-1868 three additional justice courtrooms were added along with private residences east side street just beyond what is now known as US Highway 24! These additions reflectCaptain Samuell Ewen Courthouse Square's status as one of Illinois' most prominent civic landmarks through many years!!! During this time period also large numbers Of people immigrated To America - some choosingicago while others chose Macomb County...soon becoming citizens OF ILINOS !! Today there are still descendants Of those early immigrants living right here IN KEWANEE!!!!!! Kewanee, Illinois is a small town located in the metropolitan area of Chicago, Illinois. The population was 15,719 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is one of twelve towns in Kane County. It was founded by farmers on the east side of the Kankakee River in 1837 and named after John Wesley Kewaunee, who helped found neighboring Peoria. The first settlers were Methodist Lutherans from Ohio who came to live near what is now West Side Highway and Kankakee Street in 1839. They built a log cabin adjacent to the present-day US High School campus. A post office was established at Kewanee in 1840, and mail was sent from this site until 1911 when it moved to Chicago. In 1846, Davenport brothers Isaac and Abraham bought land north of present-day Loop Road for $4 per acre (the current site of Sears Tower). This became known as "The Farm". Isaac died in 1849 without children to take ownership of the farm; his brother Abraham took over and developed it into a large corn plantation that produced maize crops and other goods until his death in 1907. In 1865, David Dixon opened up a dry goods store on Main Street which soon became an important local trade center during agricultural times. Dixon's descendant still operates the store today as Dixon's Greeting Store - one of four remaining businesses connected with him personally throughout Kane County! Dixon also played an important role in local politics through his donations to various campaigns and civic organizations over many years including serving as Chairman of Kane County Board of Commissioners from 1886-1892; Mayor of Chicago from 1895-1900; State Senator from 1901-1907; First Lieutenant Governor (later Lieutenant Governor) from 1907-1911; Member (from 1912 - 1916) and Chairperson (from 1916 - 1924)of the state senate committee on public education where he made significant contributions toward improving public schools across Illinois! In 1898 he donated land for what would become Wabash College which now exists as Western Illinois University Carbondale! He also served as President/Chancellor (1945 - 1950)of Northwestern State Teachers College – one of several private colleges chartered by General Motors Corporation – located just outside Carbondale but within reach for convenient shopping opportunities for teachers! Afternoon classes began at Wabash College on Monday October 12th 1915 thanks to Mr. & Mrs J Foyt Sr., students’ parents! Over 1,500 high school seniors graduated between May 1915 and April 1923...onethird during World War I & twothirds since 1945! Today Wabash offers more than 100 undergraduate degree programs plus many graduate degrees such as law enforcement leadership & computer science! Kane County seat until 1911 when it moved to Chicago due to lack thereof
The town of Kewanee was founded in 1824 by John H. Kewanee, a fur trader and landowner. The town grew rapidly and by 1850 had a population of around 200 people. In 1856, the town passed an act allowing for the manufacture of whisky and other alcoholic beverages. This led to rapid growth in Kewanee and its surrounding area, which saw a population increase from 1,000 people in 1870 to over 10,000 by 1900. In 1907, the first ice rink was built in Kewanee. The town continued to grow rapidly through the 20th century, reaching a population of over 30,000 by 2000. Today, Kewanee is an important cultural center in Illinois and has become known for its arts and culture scene.
