In 1924, construction began on what would become known as "the world's largest privately funded dam", which would provide irrigation water to much of central Illinois and millions of acres of land within miles of Chicago; today that dam remains one of America's most popular tourist attractions – although much effort has been made to prevent its demolition over time! Kewanee, Illinois is a small town located in central Illinois. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kewanee was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1836 as a farmstead on the east bank of the Kedzie River. The first settler, James Gentry, built a log cabin in 1840 and named it Kewanee after his brother-in-law's family name. In 1846, John Wesley Hardin purchased land near present day Wabash Avenue and Summit Street for $4 per acre; he named it Kewanee after his home state of Kentucky. By 1870, most of what is now Kewanee had been developed including farms on the north side of the river and near downtown Peoria. The first school in Kewanee opened in 1855; it was called Union Female Seminary and Training School for Girls (now known as Central High School). In 1865, two churches – First Methodist and Second Presbyterian – merged to form the Evangelical Baptist Church; this church still operates today as First United Methodist Church. A post office was established at Kewanee in 1872, and remained in operation until 1903 when it became part of the Peoria Park District. In 1905–06, there were several large fires that destroyed much of downtown Peoria; fortunately only one person lost their life as a result of these fires. One significant event during this time period happened on October 30th when President William McKinley made an official visit to Peoria; during this stopover he delivered remarks from a balcony at City Hall which can still be seen today across from Central High School on Elston Street between State and Washington Streets. This event marked an important moment for Peoria as McKinley gave approval for plans to Build Our City which would later become city hall itself!
