Kewanee, Illinois is a small town in north central Illinois. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Kewanee is located on the Kewanee River and lies within the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to Visit Kewanee were French traders in 1762, who named it after Jean-Baptiste de Kewainga, a Canadian fur trader who had settled in what is now Kane County. The Village of Kewanee was organized in 1871 and named for John Wagoner, an early settler and one of the incorporators of Kane County. The village grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the river and its access to transportation including steamboats that crossed the river to reach other parts of Illinois. In 1904, fire destroyed most of downtown KEWANEE with only a few buildings remaining standing today. However, brick blocks were used as part of new construction throughout much of Kane County until almost all new housing was built in suburban areas during World War II when rural living declined and travel became more difficult. In 1948, when Kane County became a state member of the United States Federal Union, all towns with less than 10 thousand residents were placed within newly created Cook County along with other rural counties which would be consolidated into Cook under state law that year. This left downtown KEWANEE without any development for over 50 years until it experienced another boom following annexation by Park Ridge Township in 1999 which increased business opportunities for DowntownKEWANEE while increasing parkland around it making it easier to visit as well as providing more open space for community use including reopened baseball diamonds from 1949 - present day; basketball courts from 1954 - present day; tennis courts from 1959 -present day; playgrounds from 1957 - present day; and public pools (Lake Michigan) from 1947 - Present Day). On July 1st 2017 changes took place to KaneCounty laws that will result in demolition/renovation/construction beginning immediately adjacent toDowntownKEWANEE (the "New Development") starting approximately March 2020 unless otherwise approved byMayorofKaneCounty extending through 2029 inclusive Tentative Zoning Resolution adopted by Board Of Aldermen On January 24th 2019 ^^^^

Kewanee was a town in Chicago County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in what is now Kewanee were men from Holland Township, Michigan Territory who arrived in 1837 and named their new town after their hometown of Kewanee, Indiana. The first post office was organized in 1838 and the first school was built in 1840. In 1850, Wabash Railroad tracks crossed the small community and renamed it "Kewanee" after the railroad's station there. In 1871 when Chicago County was formed, Kewanee became one of its six towns. The next year saw another railway crossing town boundaries; this time the North Shore Railroad called itself "KEWANEE-IL". This name change coincided with corresponding changes to address system within Chicago County so that all residents had two mailing addresses: one for home and one for work or business purposes only. On November 1st 1915 during World War I an artillery barrage hit KEWANEE killing 21 people including nine children inside a schoolhouse on Main Street; this event would eventually spark protests against America's involvement in war by many citizens throughout the Midwest which continue to this day! On July 4th 1920 as part of commemoration for Illinois' admission into the Union as a state (following Iowa's entry into that same year), local citizens erected a large stone statue of General George Washington near where Main Street intersects Indianapolis Drive today – still standing to commemorate those lost over 100 years ago! A total of 5 schools served students in grades Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade during these years: One notable resident from KEWANEE during these years include Dr. John Morton who served as Mayor from 1945 until his death in 1951 while also being chairman of Northwestern University's Board Of Trustees from 1946 until he stepped down following allegations of corruption; he remains revered by some locals to this day! In 1957 when Interstate 90 bypassed most of downtown Chicago due to construction projects around that area - including US Highway 6 - much excitement ensued as motorists could see what looked like a quaint little village tucked away on an otherwise empty lot just north of I-90 exit 20; sadly though no such thing existed! After 50 years since it’s founding – with consistent growth spurts along with numerous annexations and mergers throughout its history – KEWANEE has come full circle back now boasting an approximately 2,700+ population within its borders making it one of Chicagoland’s newest communities!

It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first town in what is now Kane County was called "Kewanee" by early settlers because of an oak tree that grew near their farmstead. The name may have been derived from one of three words meaning "a place to pitch hay", as there was no Pitchfork River nearby at that time. A post office was established at Kewanee in 1847 and operated until it was discontinued in 1875. In 1868, a railroad line arrived through Kewanee and began serving the townspeople; this led to its growth as a transportation center for surrounding agricultural areas. In 1880, Kewanee became the county seat when Cook County was created out of sections of Kane and DuPage counties. At that time, KEWANEE Brewery (now Anheuser-Busch) had just opened located on State Street between Court and First streets; it remains one of Kane County's most popular tourist attractions today! At various points throughout its history, KEWANEE has come under attack by Native Americans; these attacks have included raids by Sauk or Potawatomi Indians during both wars fought between them and US forces (1855-1863). One such attack took place on November 3rd 1861 when 7 men from what is now Round Lake Village were raiding a farmstead east of present day KEWANEE when they were attacked by 10 warriors from the village known as Weequahicouetotenwacomitcie (“the five nations”) who killed 5 men, captured 2 women and took all but 1 gun before escaping back into Indian Territory (northwest Missouri). As a result of these attacks some residents fled their homes for fear they would become targets themselves if hostilities continued; however, many decided to stay put after learning about local militia activities which were able to fight off any future Native American threats without becoming casualties themselves. Eventually peace came to our region thanks largely to Ulysses S Grant’s Administration which negotiated treaties with most tribes involved including those mentioned above while also providing financial resources needed for development within each community along with other initiatives like livestock improvement programs which totaled over $100 million dollars per year! In 1925-1926 construction began on what would become known as “The Great Western Toll Road”; this project aimed to connect Chicago with Okaloosa Junction near Gainesville Alabama through Wabash Valley – an undertaking that ultimately failed due primarily to political reasons pertaining to then Governor George Romney’s efforts towards annexing Indiana into Illinois as well! This event led directly to economic decline for much of southern Illinois due numerous companies relocating out west following this failure instead opting for opportunities available closer to home instead! kanecounty
