Of the original 6 settlements established within this district boundaries only two remain: KEWANEE and WOODSTOWN*. These two communities were nucleus cities because they had more people than any other settlement within their respective districts; both had over 1,000 residents by 1860* (* U.S. Census data). In 1847*, Eastern Section 3rd District boundaries were redrawn following a territorial government reorganization which merged all of Cook County into one unit under United States jurisdiction *. As a result of this change most of the old eastern section 3rd District territory including KEWANEE was transferred to Cook County when it was organized as a county on April 6th*, 1865*. When Chicago was founded on March 4th*†† in 1867*‡*, much of what are now eastern section 3rd Districts became part of new City Limits division *‡† within Chicago – including much of what are now River North and Dearborn Park areas *‡* for which little evidence remains today but which likely saw some rapid growth due to easy access to transportation and markets downtown.* (* U.S Census data) Today, many residents identify themselves with either their local community or Chicago through their work experiences or personal relationships with friends or family members who live there. There has also been considerable development around education with several high schools being built here such as White Hall School (established 1902), Northwestern High School (opened 1908), Pritzker Military Academy (established 1945), Kane Community College West Campus(opened 2009)*(*UIC website*) KEWANEE has seen many recent changes throughout its history; these include annexation by Cook County in 1965*, fire damage suffered during the 2007 tornado outbreak which destroyed many homes/buildings*/*(UIC website*) , gentrification occurring since 2000 with numerous restaurants/bars opening up along East Side Road(* reduce intersection at ESR**rental house destroyed during 2007 tornado outbreak)), increased traffic congestion caused by expansions onto I-94 serving suburban areas adjacent to town(* increase number/frequency/intensityial traffic congestion experienced between east side road & I-94 from late 2006 until early2008 ** ),and most recently AdvoCare Health Partners announced plans to open an ambulatory surgery center hereon campus****(* property at 7500 N Center Rd., just east off ESR)*(* AdvoCare Health Partners plans to open new ambulatory surgery center on campus at 7500 N Center Rd., about 2 miles north from town center
