In 1837, General James Wilkinson founded a small community called "Cascade" on nearby Mount Zion in McLean County after exploring the area for new land grants. By 1840, Cascade had a post office and two stores. In 1848, Williamson District Judge John J. Hardin donated 160 acres (65 hectares) of land east of Cascade to build what would become Kewanee Township on July 3rd of that year by proclamation from President James Buchanan as part of a program designed to promote education and rural development in central Illinois. The township was named after General Wilkinson's daughter-in-law Emma Willard who conceived the idea for it while she was staying at her father's home in Cane Ridge during the popular summer season around that time. With its name change came increased production because people realized that "kewanee" meant "clear water." In 1850, when American Civil War began, many residents left for Missouri due to fears of war overtaking their homes and communities back home; however, most returned by 1861 when Union forces entered Springfield via Kewanee Creek Bridge over the River Des Plaines into Mclean County under orders from Ulysses S Grant administration as an attempt to quash any local rebellions against pro-Union sentiment throughout central Illinois (). Aftermath of war saw an increase in smuggling operations along the eastern border with neighboring Indiana because Union troops were not allowed through those states' borders into central Illinois (). As a result, Kewanee became one of several small towns along this stretch which became known as 'the smuggling capital.' By 1865 there were only 9 residents living within boundaries defined by present day KEWANEE Township limits - all other areas had been annexed by neighbouring townships since then (). During this time period also notable events took place such as: On November 10th 1862 US Cavalry Regiment #3 under Colonel George Armstrong Custer arrived at Cascade Landing on White River just downstream from where today's Kalamazoo Road crosses White River Pedestrian bridge before continuing upriver towards Bloomington; this event led directly to Waco Siege which ended few days later with surrender of Fort Sumter by Confederate forces outside Taylorville Missouri . On February 8th 1863 Captain Charles Henningsen landed hisboat USS Paddlewheel near where Kinnickinnic Lake currently stands off shore from upstream side about 2 miles north east from present day intersection of Whites Ferry Rd./Paddlewheel Rd., northeast corner blockaded entrance & portage road leading out onto White River; this event led directly to Battle Of Black Rock which ended with Confederate victory over Union forces commanded by Major General Nathaniel Banks

It was founded in 1854 by Daniel Webster and his brothers-in-law Hiram Whetstone and Amos Kendall as West Point Village. The village became a town in 1865 and was renamed Kewanee in 1882 after the ill-fated Kewanee Creek massacre which took place near the town on October 7, 1881. In 1907, Kewanee became one of thirty cities that were merged into Chicago with its then-new metropolitan area. At the time of its incorporation as a city, Kewanee had a population of 9,813; it now has a population of 17,059 according to the 2017 US Census Bureau estimates. The first land sale for what would become Kewanee happened on November 3, 1854 when Daniel Webster sold 640 acres (240 ha) along the now known as Ford Road to Hiram Whetstone and Amos Kendall for $3 per acre ($160/ha). On February 14, 1865 - three days after West Point Village became a town - residents voted to name their new community "KEWANEE" after nearby Illiana Lake where several incidents took place during the American Civil War which led to increased tensions between Union forces and Confederate soldiers: On October 7th 1861 two companies of Confederate soldiers killed four members of the Webster family along with twelve other civilians when they stopped at Illiana Lake while traveling home from fishing league game against Hamtramck Township Rangers; this event is also known as "The KEWANEE Creek Massacre". In 1886 when village renamed to honor WWI hero General John J. Pershing's hometown of Frisco TX due to increasing patriotism throughout America following World War 1 & II donations from local citizens (over 20% federal money), everyone in village voting except 2 Republicans cast ballots against rebranding back to "West Point Village" because they felt it did not reflected their community's unique history & culture (& these same individuals would eventually help found Oak Park IL’s first City Hall). After much discussion within our small community we finally agreed upon renaming ourVillage once again to reflect our rich cultural diversity: "KEWANEE – A Heritage City" In 1897 Mayor Byron Sisler appointed Mrs Florence Conehead Van Meter Director of Parks & Recreation creating an important predecessor position still held today by many people who live & work within this exciting city!

The area that is now Kewanee was part of the Potawatomi Nation from their earliest days. The first European to explore and settle in this area was Sergeant James Doane who explored the area in 1804. In 1806, General Anthony Wayne halted his army at a spot near present day Kewanee while he investigated a treaty violation by the Potawatomi Nation. This event is often cited as the beginning of American Indian Wars.
