In 1841, Kewanee became an incorporated municipality. On July 1, 1907, Kewanee merged with neighboring towns of Rome and Park to form a new city called "Kewanee-Rome-Park." The merger was made possible because Rome had applied for incorporation but failed to receive approval from DuPage County officials. KEWANEE: A STORY OF INDIVIDUALISM AND COMMUNITY In 1830 when farming began to take hold in centralDu Page County,Illinois some farmers decided they would start their own township as early as they could get away with it - especially since there were no roads or post offices in those days! Nathaniel Hammond did just that - he organized his fellow pioneers into a band (or society) which he called "The Kews". And so it came about that our little community began as something more than just a group of farmers; we were builders too! We erected our first homes back then with logs taken from nearby cedar trees! We would go out and collect these hardwood planks until we had enough for two or three houses! It wasn't long before we started building also churches and schoolhouses! We named our first church after our founder - Nathaniel Hammond's daughter Hannah married Rev. Copley Woodson (the future Bishop of Quincy). Reverend Woodson sponsored various religious services at various local gathering places around the community... The people here were very proud during those early years when many rural communities still depended on horse drawn wagons transporting goods back and forth between farms and stores!!! After all these years...we still have many old artifacts left behind including tools used by construction workers during those pioneer days like plows & hoes etc., cars used today on busy streets etc., pictures taken while living here,, memories shared over cups of hot chocolate or coffee ! Today's residents are reuniting with their ancestors who once lived HERE...It's wonderful to see how things have changed over time!!

A year later, Charles Henson created an air pistol that fired pellets from a nozzle on top of the gun. This weapon was designed to be more accurate than earlier firearms because it lacked the need for stretchy stockings to keep the pellets in contact with the target.
