Kankakee is a city in and the county seat of Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,048 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county by population. The site of present-day Kankakee was first settled by Europeans in 1814. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Chicago and Western Railroad, which connected St. Louis with Chicago. By 1870, Kankakee had over 10,000 residents. The city was incorporated as a village in 1872 and became an incorporated town in 1898. In 1924, it became a city again pursuant to an act of the state legislature. According to the 2010 census, Kankakee has a total area of , all land. As of 2007, there were 6 reservoirs within . In 1907–08 there was an investigation into water quality issues near Kankakee after complaints about blackfly larvae eating leaves from cedar trees along Three Rivers Parkway (now I-166). A study found that parts of the creek system near where cedar trees stand were unsuitable for human or aquatic use because they had high levels of fecal coliform bacteria; this led to doubts about whether such areas should continue to be used for drinking water supply despite assurances from local officials that no harm would come to users if they did so. A new sanitary sewer system was built between 1909 and 1912 based on recommendations made during this study; however these systems did not improve water quality enough to make them acceptable for further use by humans or aquatic life. As a result of this lack of improvement over time and continuing problems with fecal coliform bacteria across many municipalities served by the now defunct Chicago Water Works District (CWD), residents withdrew their support for CWD's proposal to build new intakes into White Marsh Creek specifically because it would have allowed CWD access to more private property upstream from Kankakee than it currently does; this issue came up again when plans were made for CWD's replacement agency - Metropolitan Sewerage District - which would include heavy reliance on privately owned detention ponds for overflow during heavy rains/flooding events (the current Catchment Area Improvement Plan [CAIP] includes building two large detention pond expansions). Kankakee is a small town in Illinois, located in the Kankakee County seat of Normal. The population was 5,512 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Ojibwe word kanka-keen, meaning "place where there is plenty of water." The first permanent settler in what is now Kankakee County was George Armstrong Capps who arrived in 1814. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1818, Alexander Macdonald bought land northeast of present-day Kankakee and founded the village ofNormal. In 1842, General James Shields erected a initial stockade on what is now Main Street in downtown Normal to protect settlers from Native Americans. It remains one of only two remaining stockades in Illinois. In 1846, John McClernand bought land that includes much of what is today Kankakee County from Arthur Landis for $500. McClernand called his new communityNormal because it resembled Chicago's Northwestern University which he had seen as an ideal place to teach schoolchildren about American culture and history.normal also served as a stop on stagecoach routes between Chicago and New York City and Springfield, Illinois (now Urbana), Illinois. Railroads reached Normal by 1850; normal became an incorporated town in 1865 when all but one township (Central) were annexed by Normal). Many residents continued to live near their workplaces until after World War II when they moved out into larger communities such as Northfield or Kenilworth Hills outside of town limits
Kankakee was first settled in 1836 by the Kankakee and Peoria families. In 1847, the town of Kankakee was founded by J.F.Dutton, a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, and his wife, Eliza Dutton. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its position on the Mississippi River as a shipping point for goods from Illinois and Missouri. In 1865, Kankakee became part of the new state of Illinois. By 1870, Kankakee had a population of over 2,000 people and was one of the most populous towns in Illinois. Thanks to its strategic location on the riverboat trade route between Chicago and Decatur, Kankakee prospered until World War II when it lost many of its businesses to war-related deprivations. After the war, however, Kankakee regained some prosperity thanks to new development such as an amusement park and a shopping center that opened in 1957
