Kankakee, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,546 at the 2010 census. Kankakee is one of the most economically vibrant communities in Cook County and has been dubbed "The Village" because much of its development has taken place within walking distance of each other. The community is also home to three colleges: Kankakee Community College (formerly known as KCC), Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and Northern Illinois University Edwardsville (NIUÉ). Kankakee was founded on November 7, 1857 by George Houghton and his family. It was named for Captain John Kankakee who had fought against Native Americans in the War of 1812. In 1872, General David Dixon ordered all Indian Migrants from this area must leave or face deportation; however, many continued to settle in the area until after World War II when most were removed by federal agents. The first post office opened in Kankakee on October 12, 1858. On December 3rd, 1860 it changed its name to Beechcroft because that was the location of an early mill owned by Major James Beechcroft. The first store in town was built on Main Street just north of present day Griggs Road. By 1870 there were nine stores and 100 residents living in what is now Kankakee village limits including several log homes that still stand today along Griggs Road south of US-63/I-90 exit 129A-B). In 1875 Drury became the first blacksmith in town when he opened a shop at 5 Elmwood Avenue which later became the only grocery store west of Chicago until it closed down around 1990s due to competition from larger supermarkets across town; however Drury's shop remained open as a museum until 2007 when it moved into new facilities at 601 Wabash Avenue which contains artifacts from both Drury's time period as well as modern technology exhibits related to blacksmithing through video conferencing with historical sources such as forge engines etc.).
