Kankakee, Illinois is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. It is named for General David Kankakee, an early settler and general of the United States Army in the Mexican-American War. The town also lies within Johnson County. Kankakee is located on State Route 11 south of Poplar Bluff and east of Cairo. The first permanent settler in what is now Kankakee was Captain John Bull who arrived in 1785 and built a cabin on the bluffs overlooking the Ottawa River. Other pioneers followed until by 1820 there were only a few scattered families living near where present day Kankakee stands. In 1825 Alexander Armstrong came to this area from Indiana with his family, consisting of 10 children including Armstrong’s six year old sister Averill (Avery). On July 8th, 1825 they camped about two miles northeast of present day Kankakee on what is now called Armstrong's Road when their wagon broke axle after hitting a snag in a boggy creek bed. They continued until August 3rd when they reachedpresent day Poplar Bluff and abandoned their vehicle due to bad weather conditions which forced them to walk all night back to their original destination. On October 1st 1827 two men from Perrysburg arrived at Armstrong's Cabin sawing logs for a new house which would later become known as Fourth Street Baptist Church – then known as First Presbyterian Church – today’s Hogan Elementary School across from First Baptist Church on Main Street. As one man set up his sawmill while another unloaded wood into wagons for transport down Fourth street (now Jameson Avenue) some “young gentlemen” began clearing land that would become Old White Settlement east of Third Street today’s Robinson Cemetery just north of Present Day High School playing ball on Sunday mornings during school days or going out fishing during weekdays In 1830 Captain John Bull had three more kids born to him but all died before reaching age 6: Samuel (John), Pollyanna(Pollyannee), Cornelia (Cornelia Maria). trail sign still standing at old white settlement east of third street

The area now known as Kankakee was first settled in 1778 by French colonists. The town was named for Captain John Kankakee, a British officer who had been charged with performing reconnaissance and guard duty on the Illinois River. In 1812, the village of Sandwich was founded nearby, and Kankakee became an incorporated town in 1833. The town's population swelled during the late 19th century due to agricultural production and manufacturing activities related to railroad construction. By World War II, Kankakee had become an important center for munitions manufacturing and housing development in the region. In recent years, the community has experienced a decline in its economic status as a result of declines in manufacturing and retail businesses.
